No. 9 Marauders Upset No. 6 Pioneers for First Conference Win

Box Score

Millersville, Pa. – The Millersville field hockey team was looking to pick up its first win in PSAC East play after dropping to No. 9 in the national rankings on Tuesday.  The No. 9 Marauders got exactly that. Millersville shut out No. 6 C.W. Post at Chryst Field at Biemsderfer Stadium Tuesday by a score of 1-0.

The Marauders (5-4, 1-3 PSAC East) looked to take an early lead in the contest on a penalty corner. Freshman Rachel Dickinson slapped a shot from the top of the circle on a corner pass from Mary Atkins. The ball went straight into the back of the goal. The officials ruled that Dickinson was just outside of the circle, disallowing the goal and keeping the game scoreless.

The shots were almost even in the first session with the Pioneers (5-3, 2-2 PSAC East) holding a slight margin of 6-4. Millersville dominated the penalty corners late in the half to hold an 8-6 margin in attempts.

The Marauders only recorded two shots on goal in the first session. In the 26th minute, the second shot on goal for Millersville turned out to be the most important. Atkins struck another corner attempt over to Dickinson. Dickinson slapped the ball toward the goal into a crowd of players. Several Marauders were around the ball trying to gain control. Senior Ashley Weber found the ball and centered it to Atkins, who came off the base line from the penalty corner. Atkins knocked it into the goal to give Millersville a 1-0 lead with 10 minutes to play in the half.

C.W. Post put more pressure on the Millersville defense in the second half.  The Marauders' defenders frustrated the Pioneers' Carlee Dragon who did her best to get shots on goal. Dragon finished the game with seven shots and two on goal. Dragon was fresh off a four-goal performance in C.W. Post's 5-1 win over No. 6 Kutztown last week.

Millersville's goalkeeper Sarah Dickinson made five saves including four in the second half to secure her third shutout of the season.

The Marauders host No. 5 Indiana (Pa.) on Friday, Sept. 30 at 4 p.m. Millersville turns around on Saturday, Oct. 1 to host Seton Hill at 4 p.m.
