No. 2 West Chester Holds Off No. 8 Marauders

Millersville, Pa. – It was the first meeting between the No. 8 Marauders and the No. 2 Golden Rams since 1979. The two teams combined for seven goals in the affair. West Chester scored four of them and held off Millersville by a score of 4-3 on Saturday afternoon at Chryst Field Biemsderfer Stadium.

West Chester (6-1, 2-1 PSAC East) scored first in the 11th minute. Michele Schrift collected a loose ball in front of the goal and put it home to take the early 1-0 lead.

Millersville (4-4, 0-3 PSAC East) found a response nine minutes later. The ball was knocked around in a crowd of players in front of the Golden Ram's goalkeeper. Sophomore Samantha Ruane found herself alone on the left side with the ball to knot the game at a 1-1.

The score stood at 1-1 heading into the break. The Marauders outshot West Chester in the first side by a margin of 7-4.

It only took two minutes into the second session for the Golden Rams to reclaim the lead. West Chester's Leah Angstadt slapped the ball from 5 yards out to put the Golden Rams up, 2-1.

In the 45th minute, Millersville received a penalty corner. The Marauders led the game with 11 corners to West Chester's nine. Junior Kirsten Dively sent the corner attempt to teammate Katelyn Zapp. Zapp controlled the pass and sent a slap shot into the back of the cage to even the score at 2-2.

West Chester found two more goals in the 55th and 62nd minutes of play to take the largest lead of the game at 4-2.

The Marauders cut the lead back to one in the 64th minute when Brittany Troutman ripped a shot from just inside the circle. Troutman's shot sneaked through a crowd of player with no deflection to make it a 4-3 Golden Rams' lead.

Millersvile received several penalty corners in the waning minutes, but was unable to find an equalizer. The Marauders outshot West Chester by a 20-15 margin. Senior Sarah Dickinson made six saves for Millersville, while Kristin Arnold recorded five for the Golden Rams.

The Marauders host No. 9 C.W. Post on Tuesday, Sept. 27. Millersville is set to square off with the Pioneers at 4 p.m.
