Millersville, Pa. – The Millersville field hockey team moved up to No. 6 in the newly released national poll Tuesday, jumping Kutztown, which came in at No.7. The Golden Bears took exception to the new rankings with a convincing 2-1 win over the Marauders at Chryst Field at Biemsderfer Stadium Tuesday evening.
Kutztown (4-0, 1-0 PSAC East) entered the game holding a 17-1 record over Millersville (2-2, 0-1 PSAC East) over the last decade. The Marauders last defeated the Golden Bears in 2002 by a score of 1-0.
In the 20th minute, Kutztown's Emily Labowitz scored on a clean shot in the box to put the Golden Bears up, 1-0. Kutztown outshot Millersville 6-4 in the first half, possessing the ball in the offensive zone for most of the session.
Labowitz found herself with the ball inside the attack zone once again, just five minutes into the second half. Labowitz slapped it from eight yards out, hitting nothing except the back of the cage to extend the Golden Bears lead to 2-0.
Kutztown handled the Marauders in the second half, almost doubling their first half shot total. Millersville's goalkeeper
Sarah Dickinson stepped up big in her second game back, making 11 saves on 13 shots on goal. The Golden Bears ended the game with 17 shots to Millersville's 10.
Freshman
Rachel Dickinson, up from her defensive position, received a penalty corner from
Nicole Cave in the final minute of play. Rachel settled the ball and then cracked it from just inside the top of the circle. The ball found its way through the crowd and into the goal to cut the lead in half with 57 seconds left in regulation.
The Marauders made one last surge through midfield before the Golden Bears stopped the charge and ran out the clock.
Millersville begins a three-game road trip starting Friday, Sept. 16 when it travels to Slippery Rock. The game is slated for 4 p.m. The Marauders return home on Sept. 24 when they host No. 2 West Chester at 1 p.m.
