Box Score
Millersville, Pa. – No. 2 Shippensburg took an early 1-0 lead, but the No. 9 Millersville Marauders scored three consecutive goals and held on for a 3-2 victory. It was the first time Millersville defeated Shippensburg since 1998 and Millersville's second win over a top-10 team this season.
The Raiders took the early lead when Katie Pufnock scored on the first shot of the game in the 6th minute. Pufnock was led by teammate Bre White to put Shippensburg up, 1-0.
The Marauders (2-1) equaled the score in the 26th minute. Sophomore
Brittany Troutman stopped a centering pass from
Emily Litchford and cranked it through the crowd and into the back of the goal to knot the score at 1-1. The game went to the half tied.
Marauders' goalkeeper
Sarah Dickinson, making her first start of the season, showed why she has been one of the PSAC's best. While Shippensburg fired 16 of their 20 shots in the second period, Dickinson was up for the challenge, turning away 11 of the 13 shots on goal.
Sarah's sister
Rachel Dickinson, a freshman defender, also keyed the defensive effort. She showed a tremendous amount of skill and hustle on defense, including running down and breaking up a two-on-one breakaway by the Raiders in the 53rd minute.
Millersville extended its lead a minute later when freshman
Emily Fullerton redirected a centering pass from
Ashley Weber into an empty cage. Fullerton's goal put the Marauders up 2-1 and was the eventual game-winner.
The Millersville lead increased in the 62nd minute when Troutman slapped one in the box, and teammate
Sarah Bomberger deflected it in to go up 3-1 on the Raiders with just eight minutes to play.
Millersville, which let a late, two-goal lead against No. 1 UMass-Lowell slip away last weekend, was not about to have another letdown. Shippensburg scored in the final minute to cut the lead to one, but the time was the enemy of the Raiders and Dickinson and the defense held strong to give Millersville the 3-2 win.
Shippensburg (2-2) has lost back-to-back games for the first time since September 2007. The Raiders fell to No. 3 Bloomsburg on Tuesday in a rainy mess by a score of 1-0.
The Marauders continue their homestand on Tuesday, Sept. 13 when they host No. 7 Kutztown. Millersville and the Golden Bears square off at 6 p.m.
