Millersville, Pa. - After convincingly winning the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional to advance to the NCAA Championship, there was little doubt that Millersville was the top team in the region. The American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) agreed and named Marauder coach Jon Shehan its Atlantic Region Coach of the Year. Five Marauders claimed All-Atlantic Region honors and four more were named to the Gold Glove First Team.
Shehan, in his fourth season with the Marauders, led the team to a 43-10 record and a 21 win improvement over the previous season. His team enters the NCAA Championship ranked No. 10 in Division II and it also won the PSAC East for a second time in his four seasons.
Several Marauders had breakout seasons under Shehan's guidance. Among them were starting pitcher Mike McMonagle and shortstop Mike August. McMonagle posted an 8-1 record and 1.98 ERA in his eight starts and 11 appearances and was named ABCA All-Atlantic Region First Team.
August, Millersville's leading hitter, joined him on the first team. The first-year Marauder was also a NCBWA All-Atlantic Region First Team and Daktronics All-Atlantic Second Team selection. He hit .384 with 20 doubles and 43 RBIs.
Also landing a spot on the first team was senior first baseman Derek Kline. Kline was a Daktronics first team pick as well. He hit .337 with seven homers and 43 RBIs.
Finding a spot on the second team was starting pitcher Brooks Rothschild and reliever Zach Eckley. Both have already been recognized as all-region by Daktronics and the NCBWA. Rothschild went 10-1, tying the Millersville record for wins in a season and posted a 2.50 ERA in 79.1 innings. Eckley led the PSAC with 10 saves.
Millersville entered the NCAA Championship with the No. 1 defense in Division II. Third baseman Zach Stone, second baseman Ryan McCormick, outfielder Corey Phelan and Rothschild were awarded ABCA Atlantic Region Gold Glove First Team honors.
Stone, playing one of the most difficult defensive positions, converted 117 of 124 chances in the field for a .944 fielding percentage. McCormick, who has long been regarded as one of the top defensive second basemen in the region, finally received recognition as a senior. His range and quick hands helped him posted a .987 fielding percentage. He had a hand in turning 22 double plays and was second in the PSAC in assists, trailing only teammate Mike August.
Phelan previously won the award as a center fielder in 2008. After battling injuries, he moved to right field for the majority of the 2011 season, and displayed the strong arm and glove work that earned him the award three years ago. He did not commit an error in 95 chances and led the team with five outfield assists.
Rothschild became the second straight Marauder pitcher to win the award. He did not commit an error, recorded 12 putouts and four assists on the season.
Millersville plays No. 2 Mount Olive Saturday at 5 p.m. in Cary, N.C. Fans can listen live on MSBN.
