Game 2
Millersville, Pa. - No. 20 Millersville carried the momentum from Friday's road sweep of Kutztown into game one of Saturday's rematch at Marauder Park. Using 14 hits, including three from
Zach Stone, Millersville won 12-2 and clinched the series win over its PSAC East rivals. Kutztown needed a 10-run inning in the nightcap to win 12-5.
Millersville (20-6, 7-3 PSAC East) received at least two hits from five different batters and seven drove in at least one run. The game broke open in the fifth when with two outs,
Chris Edgar reached on an infield single, putting two on base.
Derek Kline followed with a RBI single, continuing a run of five consecutive base hits that put Millersville up 5-0.
Jeff Heisey extended the lead to seven with a two-run bomb--his fourth of the year--in the fourth, and Millersville tacked on five more in the sixth.
Kutztown (15-11, 5-7 PSAC East) starter Trent Mertz (4-2) entered the game with a team-best 4-1 record but was bounced after allowing seven runs on seven hits in 4.0 innings. Millersville's
Mike McMonagle was stellar through 5.0 innings. He improved to 3-1 after allowing two runs on four hits and two walks. He also fanned four.
Stone reached base four times, ripping three singles and getting hit by a pitch. He also drove in two runs. It was his team-high ninth multi-RBI game this year. Edgar went 2-for-4 with two runs and a RBI. Kline scored twice and plated a run.
Carlos Medina went 2-for-4 with two runs and a RBI. August drove in a game-high three and hit his team-high 11th double of the year. Heisey finished the game 2-for-2 with a single, homer, two RBIs and three runs.
Reliever
Jason Long pitched a pair of scoreless innings to close the win.
Millersville appeared well on its way to a series sweep in the nightcap as well. It took a 3-1 lead in the third on a RBI single from Kline and a sacrifice fly from August. Starter
Tim Mayza worked through four innings, allowing only one run, but in the fifth, Kutztown exploded.
Starting with seven-straight singles, the first 10 batters of the inning reached base. Shayne Houck, who started the inning with a single, capped the 10-run eruption with a grand slam. After Houck's blast,
Walter Bishop sat down the next three hitters, but the damage was complete.
Mayza (3-1), who had allowed just six total runs in his first four starts, was tagged for eight runs on 11 hits and three walks. It was the freshman's first loss. Kutztown starter Nich Boles (2-0) allowed five runs on four hits and six walks in five innings of work.
It was only the second time this year and the first time since Feb. 20 that Millersville allowed double-digit runs in a game. Edgar extended his hitting streak to eight games. In the four game series, Stone went 7-for-14 and drove in 10 runs.
McCormick and Edgar both scored two runs. Stone drove in two runs. Kline added another single and a RBI, pushing his career hits total to 213--just eight shy of Ryan Brink's school record.
Millersville is scheduled to return to action Wednesday at Marauder Park against Washington Adventist. Be sure to follow the Marauers on Twitter @MarauderNews where up-to-the-second updates on game cancelations will be posted.
