No. 16 Huskies Escape in Game Two to Sweep Marauders

Game 1 | Game 2

Millersville, Pa. – The Marauders were down four runs heading into the bottom of the sixth inning in game two when it found a spark from an atypical source. But the No. 16 Huskies held on in the final inning to escape with a sweep over Millersville by scores of 5-0 and 5-4.

Bloomsburg (21-3, 4-0 PSAC Central) was held to just one hit in the first three innings of game one. Millersville's starting pitcher Sarah Signore (3-5) allowed a hit to the first batter she faced but then retired 10 of the next 11 before giving up another.

With two outs and one on base the Huskies were finally able to get on board in the fourth inning when Emily Young went yard on fastball down the middle. Signore struck out the next batter to end inning.

Bloomsburg added to its lead in the next two innings to extend its lead to 5-0 through five innings of play.

The Marauders (11-15, 1-5 PSAC East) were unable to find an answer in the first of two, connecting for just four hits in the first game.

Signore led at the plate for Millersville with two base hits off the Huskies' ace to go 2-for-4 in the game. Signore went the distance from the circle giving up five runs on nine hits, while striking out five.

Bloomsburg's Shavaun Fisher (10-2) also went the distance to earn her fifth shutout of the season. Fisher gave up just four hits with six strike outs and no walks.

The Huskies didn't waste time heading into game two by getting an early 1-0 lead in the first inning. The damage could have been worse, but Signore relayed the ball to Casey Coker from right field after a Bloomsburg single to throw out the lead runner heading to third base.

The lead was pushed to three in the second after Bloomsburg scored twice more. The Marauders second fielding error of the game extended the inning to allow both runs.

Cait Paine (11-1) held Millersville in check, retiring six of the first seven outs by strikeouts.

Coker, who has been struggling at the plate since the start of conference play, went yard in the fourth inning for the second time this season to put the Marauders on the board.

In just her second collegiate career at bat, and of the game, Alicia Hughes followed with a liner to the gap in right-center field for a slide in double. Abigail Ruoss then singled to right field, but a base-running error by Hughes ended a potential two-out rally.

Bloomsburg loaded the bases in the sixth inning after already scoring one run with a leadoff single and double. Hughes (6-7) stayed composed, surrendering only one more run before getting out of the jam.

Kelly Fitzgerald was having an off day at the plate until the bottom of the sixth inning. Fitzgerald roped one to center field for a stand-up double.

Two batters later Allison Chew crushed the ball over the outfield fence in center to see the ball disappear over the hill and bring the Marauders within two, down 5-3. Coker and Hughes both singled to keep the rally going, but the Huskies were able to get the two outs it needed to go into the final inning of play.

Bloomsburg was unable to get any insurance runs and relied on its defense to close out the game.

Davina Kachnovitz kept hope alive for Millersville by singling to center field. Fitzgerald then drove Kachnovitz home with her second double of the game to bring the score to 5-4 in favor of the Huskies.

Bloomsburg decided not to take a chance with its starter for the final two outs, and brought in game one starter, Fisher to try and pick up the save.

That is exactly what Fisher did. She forced two pop ups in the infield to end the game and record her first save of the season, giving Paine her 11th win.

During the doubleheader, Millersville worked to raise funds for the Ronald McDonald house. Millersville is back in action tomorrow at the Millersville University Softball Field when its takes on East Stroudsburg in a game that was postponed on Friday. The doubleheader is slated for 1 p.m.
