Bowie, Md. – The Millersville softball team put on clinic at the dish in its final games of the season. The Marauders out-hit the Lady Bulldogs by a 29-9 margin. Sarah Signore picked up a complete game shutout in the first affair as Millersville won 10-0. Bowie State was able to score one in the second but fell 8-1 as the Marauders completed the sweep.
Millersville (16-22) had eight batters in the lineup record a hit on the day. Kelly Fitzgerald and Casey Coker both had five hits apiece, while Signore, Deanna Schneiderreit and Heidi Wilson each had four. Wilson was the most productive batter for the Marauders, going 4-for-5.
Bowie State (20-18) had seven errors in the field of play and was held scoreless for 13 innings—12-straight before getting its only run in the sixth inning of game two.
Signore (5-9) earned her 13th complete game and second shutout of her career. She struck out eight, walked two and only surrendered five hits in seven innings of work. Signore leaves Millersville with 13 career wins and 193 career strikeouts.
The Marauders started hitting early with Signore hitting a leadoff double to begin game one. She scored from third when Bowie State's catcher picked off Schneiderreit trying to steal second. Fitzgerald followed with another double.
Coker singled after Allison Chew walked to load the bases with just one out in the inning. Wilson drove in Fitzgerald from third to collect her only RBI of the day and put Millersville up, 2-0.
The lead was extended to three in the second inning after Schneiderreit hit an RBI-double to left field, scoring Davina Kachnovitz from second.
In the fourth inning, Fitzgerald hit her fourth home run of the season with a runner on base to push the lead to 5-0 after four.
The Marauder scored twice more in the sixth inning.
In the final inning of game one Millersville pushed its lead to 10, scoring three more on four hits. Schneiderreit, going 3-for-5 in the game, hit her second RBI-double.
Alicia Hughes (9-8) pitched five shutout innings in game two, striking out five and walking none before being relieved by Courtney Eckman. Eckman closed out the game and her career, giving up just one hit while striking out three in the final two innings. The senior pitcher will be missed after having the team's best ERA two of the last three seasons.
The ball was knocked over the fence for the second time when Chew hit her fifth of the season with one runner on to increase Millersville's lead to 3-0 after three. Kachnovitz score the first run of the inning off a sacrifice fly by Schneiderreit.
Two more runs were put on the board in the fifth inning in favor of the Marauders. Coker hit her fifth single of the day to drive in one. The senior infielder wrapped up her career with an impressive .286 batting average with 144 career hits, 88 career RBIs and 95 career runs scored. Coker leaves Millersville as the single-season put-out record with 337.
The Marauders increased their lead to 7-0 before the Lady Bulldogs scored their only run of the day in the sixth inning. Millersville scored once more in the seventh to end the season with a 8-1 victory and sweep.
