Hughes’ One-Hitter Gives Marauders Split With East Stroudsburg

Game 1 | Game 2

East Stroudsburg, Pa. – Monday afternoon at Zimbar Field saw a lot of runs cross the plate. The Warriors took game one in five innings, 16-8. Alicia Hughes responded in game two with a one-hit shutout in five innings to lead the Marauders to an 8-0 win.

Millersville (14-22, 4-12 PSAC East) and East Stroudsburg (13-22, 4-12 PSAC East) scored early and often in the first affair.  The Marauders, like they have all season, put a run on the board with two outs in the first side. Allison Chew sent Deanna Schneiderreit home from second with her, single-season high, eighth double of the year.

The Warriors didn't waste any time in the bottom half. Brittany Racek walked to start off the inning and then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Sam Capriotti. East Stroudsburg struck the ball consistently after that with a single, two doubles and another single to score four runs before being retired.

Millersville, down 4-1, found a spark in the second inning when freshman Emily Sneeringer singled as the leadoff. Two outs later Davina Kachnovitz drove in Sneeringer with a double to cut the lead to two. Sarah Signore put runners at the corners with a single, pushing Kachnovitz to third. A fielding error scored Kachnovitz and put Schneiddereit on base to extend the inning.

Kelly Fitzgerald singled to the outfield, driving in both runners, to give the Marauders the lead back, up 5-4. Millersville scored once more in the top of the fourth to push its lead to two.

The bottom of the fourth doomed the Marauders. East Stroudsburg let loose with 10 runs on eight hits. Three different Warriors had multiple hits in the inning including Racek, who doubled and tripled. Millersville committed two fielding errors to extend the scoring but did get out of the inning with three runners stranded.

East Stroudsburg put the game away in the fifth, scoring two more runs to extend its lead to 16-8 and ended the game.

Hughes (8-8) shut down the Warriors' lineup in game two. She surrendered just one hit in the second inning of play to earn the one-hit shutout. Hughes only struck out one batter but forced 12 of the 17 to ground out.

The Marauders started game two scoring in each of the first three innings. Chew recorded the first RBI of the game for Millersville for the second-straight game. This time she tripled sending Fitzgerald, who got on base by a fielding error, home from first. Casey Coker followed with a single to put the score at 2-0 through one.

Kachnovitz showed unusual power in the second inning when she bombed one over the fence for a two-run homer. It was her first collegiate home run.

Millersville put the game out of reach in the third, scoring four more runs to extend its lead to 8-0. Coker, Hughes, Heidi Wilson and Ally Homa each registered a single in the four-run inning. Wilson and Homa both drove in runs.

The Warriors were out hit by a 10-1 margin in game two. Coker and Kachnovitz both went 2-for-2 in game two, while Homa was 2-for-3.

The Marauders wrap up their season tomorrow on the road. They travel to Bowie, Md., to take on the Yellow Jackets of Bowie State. The doubleheader is slated for 2:30 p.m.
