Millersville, Pa. - Mike McMonagle spent the better part of two years recovery from Tommy John Surgery. He's officially back. The Marauder junior led his team to a 5-0 win in game one of Sunday's doubleheader with Shippensburg, clinching the series victory. Shippensburg nipped Millersville by a 3-1 score in the nightcap.
McMonagle (5-1) improved to 4-0 against the PSAC East with a complete game shutout of the visting Raiders. He surrendered only five hits and a walk. In 27.1 innings against league competition, McMonagle has a 1.98 ERA and struck out 23 whie walking 10.
Millersville (28-8, 15-5 PSAC East) picked up its first run in the second on a sacrifice fly from Ryan McCormick. Millersville had the bases loaded against starter Ted Williams (2-5) but failed to score any more that inning.
In the third, Millersville received a RBI single from Corey Phelan and a RBI double from Ryan Chesler to build the lead to 3-0. Jeff Heisey added a two-run single in the fifth, giving McMonagle more than enough run support. It was Millersville's sixth shutout of the season.
Mike August was the catalyst for the Marauder offense.He drew walks in all three plate appearances,stole a base and scored three runs. Carlos Medina and Phelan both had two hits.
Entering game two, the Marauders had scored 47 runs in the previous five games, but Ship starter Shawn Patterson (2-0) stymied the lineup and held it to just one hit through six innings. In the seventh, Patterson retired the first two batters, but despite trailing 3-1, the Marauders weren't finished.
Zach Stone doubled down the left field line, and August followed with a single. Phelan then singled in Stone, knocking Patterson out of the game. Ship's closer Kody Kibler entered to face Chesler with two runners on base. Chesler hit a chopper to Sam Phillips at shortstop. Phillips fired to second for the force, but a hustling Phelan beat the throw, putting the go-ahead run at first base.
Kibler, however, managed to end the Millersville rally by getting Heisey to ground out to the third base.
It was a much-needed win for the Raiders, who stayed in the PSAC Tournament picture by improving to 8-8 in league play and 15-21 overall.
Millersville starter Tim Mayza (3-3) was the hard-luck loser. He went five innings and allowed just two runs on three hits. One of the runs credited to him came in to score when Jason Long gave up a two-run homer to Pat Kregeloh in the sixth inning.
Both teams managed just four hits in the game. Phelan went 2-for-2 for the Marauders. August and Stone recorded the other two hits.
Prior to game one, Kline, who set the Millersville record for career hits Friday on the road, was recognized for his achievements by Coach Jon Shehan and Millersville Director of Athletics Peg Kauffman. He was presented with the baseball from his record-breaking hit and a trophy.
Millersville now gets a break from PSAC East competition until April 29. The Marauders are schedued to host nationally ranked Wilmington on April 21.
