Game 2
Millersville, Pa. - On the day its seniors were recognized in their final home games, Millersville nearly swept the doubleheader against PSAC East leading Shippensburg. The Marauders took game one by a score of 3-2. But then the Raiders used a seventh-inning rally to overcome Millersville, 5-4, in game two to split.
Millersville (13-19, 3-9 PSAC East) held Shippensburg (25-11, 11-3 PSAC East) scoreless in the first five innings of game one.
Senior Casey Coker got things started for the Marauders in the second inning with a single. Coker advanced to second after Emily Sneeringer grounded out to second base, getting into scoring position with two outs.
Taylor Odell-Smith doubled to right-center, driving home Coker from second base to take the early 1-0 lead after two.
The Marauders added to their lead in the fourth inning after another Coker single got Millersville rolling. Coker went 2-for-3 and scored two of the three runs to lead the Marauders in game one.
With two outs and runners on second and third, Ally Homa came to the plate 0-for-1 on the day. Homa roped the ball to left-center scoring both runners and extending the lead to 3-0.
The Raiders finally got on the board in the top of the sixth after Courtney Steele led off the inning with a double. Abby Payne, who pinch ran for Steele, advanced to third after a dropped ball on a pop fly in the outfield. Payne was driven home by Marygrace Serra on a fielder's choice to cut the lead to two heading into the final inning.
Shippensburg scored once more in the seventh after Steele hit her second double in back-to-back innings to drive home Dana Ward from first.
Senior Sarah Signore (4-7) closed out the game to earn her fourth win of the year in her final home start. Signore pitched five scoreless innings, struck out three and gave up just six hits in the complete game victory.
The second game had lots of action early on with Millersville taking the advantage through one.
The Raiders set the tone with three hits in the top half. Their first four batters all reached base but were unable to cross the plate thanks to great defensive work by the Millersville infielders.
The Marauders took advantage of throwing mistakes in the bottom half of the inning. Kelly Fitzgerald laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt to advance Signore and Deanna Schneiderreit to third and second.
Allison Chew, coming off a game winning grand slam a week ago, singled to left field to score Signore from third. An error by the left fielder who was trying to throw out Chew advancing to second sent Schneiderreit home and advanced Chew to third. But the at bat wasn't over yet. Shippensburg's right fielder tried to gun down Schneiderreit at home plate but the throw sailed over the catcher's head to send Chew home and give Millersville a 3-0 lead through one.
The Raiders cut the deficit to one in the third inning after scoring two runs on two hits with two errors by the infield.
Millersville answered with one run in the bottom half to extend its lead to 4-2. Schneiderreit hit her fifth double of the season. She scored off a throwing error by catcher, who was trying to throw her out at third.
The game remained 4-2 heading into the seventh and final inning. That is when Shippensburg showed why it was previously ranked No. 24 in the nation.
After back-to-back singles by Ward and Moira Johnsen, Alicia Hughes was yanked from the circle still having the lead. Three hits and three runs later the Raiders had their first lead of the afternoon up 5-4.
Senior Courtney Eckman (2-5) did her job, recording three outs and just giving up one run to give the Marauders a chance in the final side.
Shippensburg's Emily Estep (14-2), the reigning PSAC East Pitcher of the Week, struck out all three batters to cap the Raider's rally and split the doubleheader with a 5-4 win in game two.
The Marauders hit the road for their final three doubleheaders of the season. They travel to West Chester tomorrow for a 2:30 p.m. start time, then head to East Stroudsburg Saturday before closing out the season next Tuesday at Bowie State.
