Game 1 |
Game 2
Mansfield, Pa. - Senior
Derek Kline made history as the Millersville baseball team made a statement. Kline recorded the 220th hit of his career Thursday, tying Ryan Brink's Millersville record, and the Marauders ripped nationally-ranked Mansfield by scores of 15-6 and 10-4 on the road.
No. 20 Millersville's (25-7, 12-4 PSAC East) road doubleheader with No. 26 Mansfield (16-9, 5-5 PSAC East) had been rescheduled several times because of poor weather. The Mountaineers entered the game with the second best record in the PSAC East but Millersville pounded out 25 hits--15 in game one and 10 in game two--to produce its highest scoring doubleheader of the season.
Kline did his part. He went 3-for-5 with three runs and two RBIs in game one, and his single in the first inning of game two put him even with Brink, a member of the Millersville University Athletic Hall of Fame.
It was Kline's RBI double that opened the floodgates in game one.
Ryan McCormick, who was hit by a pitch three times and walked once, reached base after being plunked in the top of the first.
Chris Edgar drew a walk, and Kline ripped an RBI double. The Marauders went on to score four runs on four hits in the inning.
The Marauders continued to pour it on, scoring two more in the second on a
Carlos Medina two-run homer. Millersville chased starter Marc Baker (3-1) after 1.2 innings. The lead continued to swell after two Mansfield errors led to two runs in the fourth, and seven hits pushed seven more runs across the plate in fifth.
While Millersville's offense forced Mansfield to use seven pitchers, freshman
Tad Barton (4-0) was outstanding in his first conference start. He pitched a complete game and allowed only two runs until a four-run seventh. He struck out five and scattered eight hits.
Kline, Medina,
Zach Stone and
Mike August all tallied three hits. Medina went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and four runs. Stone drove in two runs.
The Millersville bats didn't let up in the nightcap. McCormick set the table in the first with a walk and Edgar singled for the first of his three hits. McCormick later scored on a throwing error, and Kline tied the career hits record with a RBI single.
Mansfield knotted the game with two runs off of
Brian Black (2-0) in the bottom of the first, but it was all Millersville from there. The Marauders took a 4-3 lead into the top of the seventh, and
Jeff Heisey's lead-off single started a rally that blew open the game. The Marauders drew four walks and needed just two hits to put five runs on the board.
Black picked up the win after throwing four innings.
Adam Zipko and
Jason Long both threw shutout innings in relief. Craig Cyerman (1-3) shouldered the loss after allowing five runs in four innings.
McCormick scored four runs, tallied a single and double and walked twice. Edgar totaled three hits including a triple. Stone plated two runs with two hits.
Millersville has now taken three of four from all four PSAC East opponents its played. It returns to league play Friday at Shippensburg. Fans can listen to the action on
