ABOUT THE GAME
· After closing out the season with a 22-6 record and making its ninth trip in 10 years to the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Semifinals, the Millersville women's basketball team notched its fourth-straight bid to the NCAA Division II Tournament. The Marauders enter as the No. 6 of eight seeds in the Atlantic Region. The trip marks Millersville's 10th Division II Tournament appearance and ninth under head coach
Mary Fleig.
· The Atlantic Region is comprised of schools from the PSAC, the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC) and the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA). Three teams represent the PSAC in the tournament (California, Edinboro and Millersville), while three also represent the WVIAC Charleston, Glenville State and West Liberty) and two clubs come from the CIAA (Johnson C. Smith and Shaw).
· The quarterfinal match-up Friday pits West Liberty's offense verses Millersville's defense. The Hilltoppers rank sixth in Division II in scoring offense with 82.0 points per game, 15.7 more than their opponents. The squad also averages 10.5 3-pointers per game which ranks fifth in the division. Millersville, on the other hand, is fifth in the nation in rebounding margin and holds a +9.6 board advantage per game over its opponents. The Marauders also rank second in Division II with 6.1 blocks per game and average 12.6 steals per game.
· Team leaders and sophomore standouts
Aurielle Mosley and
Mashira Newman were awarded All-PSAC East accolades. Mosley was selected to the conference's First Team, while Newman earned Second Team honors.
· The Marauders and West Liberty have matched up only twice before, each meeting coming in the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Division II Atlantic Region Tournament. The first match up between the two clubs took place in the 1999-2000 season and MU came away with a 64-63 victory. Just one year ago the squads met again in the first round of the tournament and Millersville downed the Hilltoppers, 66-50 to advance to the second round.
ABOUT WEST LIBERTY
· West Liberty is the No. 3 seed in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Region Tournament. The Hilltoppers will take on sixth-seeded Millersville for the second-consecutive season in the quarterfinal round. Last year the Marauders handed West Liberty a 66-50 defeat at California (Pa.) to advance to the semifinals.
· The Hilltoppers are making their 11th trip to the Division II Tournament in the past 15 years and are one of three West Virginia Conference teams to earn a regional invitation. West Liberty, which was 18-4 in conference play, was upset by Concord, 65-61 in the WVIAC quarterfinals. The loss snapped a 22-game win streak for the Hilltoppers against the Mountain Lions, a record that dated back to 1993.
· West Liberty seniors Tori Hansen and Laura Malernee were named to the All-WVIAC First Team, and sophomore Jenni Robbins received honorable mention. It marked the third-consecutive year Hansen received the post-season honor.
