Clermont, Fla. – The Millersville softball team split its two games Wednesday to stay even on the season. A seventh-inning rally by American International ended the Marauders' three-game winning streak, but they rebounded against Post University with a 4-1 victory.
Millersville (4-4) committed four errors and surrendered six runs--all unearned--against American International (2-5). Two of those errors occurred during the Yellow Jackets' rally in the bottom of the seventh. American International went on to end the game with a walk-off three-run homer by Stephanie Belanger.
The game was knotted at 1-1 through four complete innings. The Marauders pulled away momentarily in the top of the fifth inning with three runs on two hits to take a 4-1 advantage.
Sarah Signore led off the inning with a single. She made her way to third base from a Kelly Fitzgerald sacrifice bunt and a stolen base.
Freshman Taylor Odell-Smith came up to bat with two outs and Signore still on third. Odell-Smith crushed the ball over the left-field fence to hit her second home run in as many games.
Millersville held the 4-1 lead until the bottom of the seventh when American International finally found its bats, scoring five runs on three hits to steal a 6-4 win.
Signore struck out seven batters in six and a third innings of work.
The Marauders' defense improved against Post (1-6), playing error free in the 4-1 edge.
After an inning and a half of scoreless play Millersville established its dominance from the plate scoring two runs on four hits in the bottom of the second, then two runs on three hits in the bottom of the third.
The Eagles scored just one run on three total hits.
Alicia Hughes (3-2) collected her second-straight win, pitching 11 scoreless innings in her last two starts before giving up Post's only run in the top of the seventh inning.
Allison Chew had an outstanding game from the plate, collecting seven total bases on two doubles and a triple.
The Marauders continue play tomorrow at 11:30 a.m. when they take on Saint Joseph's (Ind.) followed by a second matchup with Post University at 1:30 p.m.
