Clermont, Fla. – It took 10 innings for the Millersville softball team to even its record to 3-3 Monday. The Marauders collected 30 total hits in two games that lasted a combined time of two and a half hours–the same amount of time it took to finish yesterday afternoon's extra-inning thriller.
Millersville (3-3) took an early 1-0 lead over Urbana (1-4) in the top of the first inning. The Blue Knights responded immediately in the bottom half of the inning with two runs of their own to take a 2-1 edge through one.
The Marauders' bats came to life in the second inning and the inning must have seemed like an eternity for Urbana.
Millersville led off the inning with three-straight singles by Deanna Schneiderreit, Casey Coker and Emily Sneeringer.
Stepping up to the plate next was freshman Taylor Odell-Smith, who starting at shortstop for the first time this season. Odell-Smith drove the ball into center field for a stand-up double and two RBIs. The Marauders got two more runs to increase the lead to 7-2 before the Blue Knights made a pitching change.
Still in the second inning with two outs and bases loaded, Odell-Smith stepped into the batter's box for the second time in the inning. She crushed the ball over the left-center field fence for a grand slam. Odell-Smith finished the game with six RBIs on a single, double and home run in three at-bats.
Millersville would get two more runs in the fourth inning to extend its lead to 14-3. In five innings of play the Marauders collected 16 hits and 13 RBIs on 30 at-bats.
Eight players in the lineup finished the game with at least one hit, including six with multiple hits.
Sarah Signore (1-1) picked up her first win of the season, pitching five complete innings with four strikeouts.
The Marauders didn't waste much time in the second game against Southern New Hampshire (1-6) as they scored in each of the first three innings.
Millersville started the bottom of the first with back-to-back doubles by Davina Kachnovitz and Signore.
The Marauders scored two in the first then two in the second to chase the Penmen starting pitcher. The top of the third inning did not bode well for Southern N.H.'s reliever as she gave up five runs on six hits before being pulled after two-thirds of an inning. Millersville would tack on one more run to increase its lead to 10-0.
That would be all the scoring the Marauders needed as they wrapped up their second five-inning, mercy ruled game of the day.
Alicia Hughes (2-2) picked up her second win of the year in the five-inning shut-out. She gave up just two hits, while striking out three.
Millersville's 10 runs were scored on 14 hits and nine RBIs. For the second-straight game, eight players in the line-up had at least one hit. Six players hit a double in the win including Kachnovitz, Signore, Kelly Fitzgerald, Coker, Allison Chew and Ally Homa.
Signore led the way from the plate in the win after commanding the preceding game from the circle. She hit a single, double and triple, needing just a home run to complete the cycle.
The Marauders have a one-day break on Tuesday. They will resume play Wednesday morning at 9:30 a.m. against American International College followed by Post University at 11:30 a.m.
