Clermont, Fla. – Millersville's softball team found itself behind early in the second day of play in Florida. The Marauders flexed their muscles in the second game with a 9-7 comeback victory in extra innings over the Blue Knights of Urbana. The Marauders dropped the preceding game to Grand Valley State, 6-0.
Millersville (1-3) saw itself down four against Grand Valley State (1-0) before it stepped up to bat. The Lakers had a three-hit, four-run first inning to give themselves the early momentum.
Grand Valley extended its lead in the top of the fifth to 6-0 and seemingly put the game out of reach.
For the second day in a row the Marauders left several runners on base in their opening game.
Sara Signore led the way for Millersville with two-hits, while freshman
Emily Sneeringer had the team's only extra-base hit.
The beginning of the second game resembled the first as the Marauders trailed Urbana (1-3) 5-1 after two full innings.
Millersville responded in the top of the third inning with three-runs to cut the lead to one.
The teams exchanged a run each to put the Blue Knights' lead to 6-5 with one inning to play
Kelly Fitzgerald led off the top of the seventh inning with a single. She advanced to second on an
Allison Chew sacrifice bunt. Fitzgerald then stole third.
With two outs
Abigail Ruoss came in to pinch hit with a runner on third, two-outs and a chance to extend the game with an RBI hit. That is exactly what she did. Ruoss singled into right field to send Fitzgerald home and knot the game at six.
The Blue Knights were unable to score in the bottom of the inning and sent the game into extra innings.
In the top of the eighth inning with runners at first and second, Signore singled to right field sending
Davina Kachnovitz home. A throwing error by Urbana's right-fielder would send
Ally Homa home for the eventual winning run with signore advancing to third. A wild pitch would send Signore home to extend Millersville's lead to 9-6.
The Blue Knights mustered only one run in the bottom of the eighth, giving Millersville its first win of the season, 9-7.
Alicia Hughes (1-2) picked up her first win of the season in relief. In 6.1 innings, she faced 27 batters, struck out seven and gave up just one run.
The Marauders continue play in Florida tomorrow when they face Urbana for a second-straight game at 9:30 a.m., and Southern New Hampshire at 11:30 a.m.
