Millersville, Pa. - Millersville's formula of stellar pitching and a red-hot lineup proved successful again in Saturday's 2011 home opener against Clarion.
Brooks Rothschild's five shutout innings led Millersville to a 7-1 win in the opener, and
Tim Mayza paved the way to a 7-3 win in the nightcap.
Millersville (7-2), has now won six in a row and has not allowed more than three runs in seven of its nine games. Seven wins in the first nine games marks the best start to the season since the 2001 club opened 11-1.
The Marauders jumped all over Clarion (0-2) in the first inning of the doubleheader.
Ryan McCormick, who reached base four times in the game, was hit by a pitch, and
Chris Edgar,
Derek Kline and
Corey Phelan each followed with singles. Kline and Phelan both drove in runs to give Millersville a quick 2-0 lead. Millersville scored three runs on four hits in the third.
Zach Stone drove in a pair with a single, and
Nick Bonadies raced home on a wild pitch.
Working with a 5-0 lead, Rothschild (3-0) cruised. It was his third start of this year and the fourth since last season's finale that he did not allow a run, pushing his consecutive scoreless innings streak to 25.2. He now stands just 1.1 innings from the PSAC record. Rothschild surrendered just four hits and a walk while striking out five.
Stone finished game one with three RBIs.
Mike August went 3-for-4 with an RBI. Kline went 2-for-4.
Millersville's potent lineup was kept off-balance in game two by Clarion starter Eric Panko (0-1). Panko did not allow a hit until the fourth, but Millersville manufactured a run in the second when August walked, advanced on a wild pitch, stole third and scored on Stone single.
The Marauders erupted for four runs on five hits in the fourth.
Nick Bonadies drove in a run and Kline collected a pair of RBIs on bases-loaded single.
Mayza (2-0), making just the third start of his career, looked like anything but a freshman. He struck out the side in the first and held Clarion to just one hit over the first five innings. In the sixth, the Golden Eagles rallied for three to close Millersville's lead to 5-3. But Mayza escaped the inning with the lead intact. He finished with nine strikeouts.
Millersville added some insurance in the bottom of the inning. After loading the bases, Clarion reliever T.J. Anderson plunked Kline to push a run across. A fielding error allowed another Marauder run to score.
Senior
Zach Eckley came on in the bottom of the seventh and pitched a perfect inning, registering two strikeouts.
Kline went 2-for-2 with a walk and hit by pitch. He also drove in three runs. McCormick reached base twice more with a single and walk. Stone and August both scored twice.
Millersville takes its six-game winning streak south beginning March 8 at Wingate.
