Cummings Gets 300th Win as Marauders Split With West Chester

Game 1 | Game 2

Millersville, Pa. - Using a complete game effort from Sarah Signore and some timely hitting, the Millersville softball team topped West Chester 3-1 in the opener of Wednesday's PSAC East doubleheader. It was the 300th win of Coach Kathy Cummings' career. West Chester, however, captured game two by a score of 5-2.

Cummings, now in her 19th season, is the first Millersville softball coach to reach the 300-win mark. The game one victory was also Millersville's first division win of the year as it improved to 11-13 overall and 1-5 in league play. West Chester moved to 16-13 and evened its league record at 3-3.

Signore (3-4) struck out five and scattered five hits and three walks over seven innings. She held West Chester scoreless through five innings and it wasn't until Kate Kmiecinski's solo homer that West Chester put a run on the board. The Marauders struck first when Casey Coker drew a bases loaded walk in the first inning.

The 1-0 lead remained until the Marauders added two more in the fifth on a RBI single from Deanna Schneiderreit and a RBI double from Allison Chew. The extra two runs were key as Kmiecinski's homer came in the following inning.

West Chester threatened in the seventh, recording back-to-back one-out hits and a walk with two outs. But Signore steadied and managed to escape a bases loaded jam.

Chew led the Marauders at the plate with two hits.

West Chester took the upper hand early in the nightcap. Erin McNamee's leadoff triple set the stage for a three-run inning off of Millersville starter Alicia Hughes (6-6). Hughes lasted through 3.1 before turning the ball over to Courtney Eckman.

In the fourth, Schneiderreit drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to cut the deficit to two, but the Marauders stranded two. West Chester scored two in the fifth to boost the lead to 5-1, but Millersville was on the verge of a rally in the bottom of the inning. Signore and Ally Homa delivered back-to-back hits and Davina Kachnovitz roped a RBI single. With the bases loaded and two outs, Schneiderreit hit a shot that got past the shortstop, but the umpire called Kachnovitz for runner's interference, ending the inning.

Millersville could not crack West Chester's Kim Murl (8-7) in the seventh, either. Murl went the distance, striking out six while allowing two runs on eight hits. Eckman allowed two runs in 3.2 innings from Millersville. Chew, Kachnovitz and Signore all totaled two hits for the Marauders.

Millersville returns to action on Friday against PSAC East foe East Stroudsburg. The home doubleheader is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
