Home Runs Spark Marauders on Final Day in Salem

Box Score (D&E)
Box Score (Glenville State)

Salem, Va. - Three different Marauders went yard on Sunday in back-to-back wins that improved their record to 10-8. Millersville beat Davis & Elkins, 3-2, and Glenville State, 7-1.

Millersville (10-8) trailed D&E for much of the first game after the Senators took a 2-0 lead in the first inning.

Kelly Fitzgerald continued her hit-streak--now 17 games and counting--with a solo home run over the left field fence in the top of the fourth inning to put the Marauders on the board. It was Fitzgerald's second home run of the weekend and of the season.

D&E's starting pitcher, Alanna Jones, controlled the Millersville bats for six full innings, striking out 11. But the Marauders chased her out in the seventh.

Down one run, Abigail Ruoss led off the top of the inning with a single up the middle to put the tying run on base. Ally Homa followed with another single to put runners on first and second. Deanna Schneiderreit reached base on a fielder's choice with the Senators throwing out the lead runner at third.

Sarah Signore, who struck out in her first two at bats, found redemption by slapping the ball into the outfield scoring both base runners to give Millersville its first lead of the game. Signore was thrown out at third trying to stretch her double into a triple, but the job was done.

Signore (2-2) closed out the bottom half of the inning to cap the Marauders' comeback. She struck out the first two batters then forced a pop out behind the plate to win her second game of the season. In her third complete game of the season Signore struck out four and walked none.

Millersville flexed its muscle in its final game at the W.Va. Wesleyan tournament by out-hitting Glenville state by a 12-4 margin.

The Pioneers struck first in the bottom of the first inning with one run. Two throwing errors by the Marauder catcher advanced Brittany Handly from first to third. Handly went home on a sacrifice fly to left field by Meagan Lesser.

Allison Chew led off the second inning for the Marauders with a single, continuing a hit-streak of her own. Chew recorded a hit in all five games in Salem.

Millersville knotted the game at 1-1 after Glenville State made a throwing error that advanced Casey Coker to third. Coker was sent home by a Schneiderreit single.

Coker crossed the plate once more in the fourth inning after crushing a pitch over the fence with two runners on for her first home run of the season. The Marauders' lead was increased to 5-1 with Davina Kachnovitz scoring off a fielding error on a hit preceding the home run.

Millersville wasn't finished yet. On the first pitch of the seventh inning, Chew swung the bat and belted the ball over the center field fence to push the lead to six, 7-1.

Alicia Hughes (6-4) closed out the game with three strikeouts, no walks and just four hits in seven innings of work.

The Marauders open up PSAC East play on Tuesday, March 22 when they travel to Kutztown to take on the No. 11 Golden Bears. The doubleheader is slated for 2:30 p.m.
