Game 1 | Game 2
Silver Spring, Md. - Led by the starting pitching of Brian Black and Tad Barton, the Millersville baseball team took a doubleheader from Washington Adventist Tuesday afternoon in Silver Spring, Md. Millersville won the opener by a 6-4 score and then completed the sweep with a 4-2 win in game two.
Black (1-0) surrendered only one run on three hits and fanned four in six innings of work. His dominance allowed Millersville (11-3) to jump out to a 6-1 lead. Corey Phelan paced Millersville with two hits, a run, a stolen base and three RBIs. He picked up his first RBI in the first inning when he drove in Ryan McCormick. Derek Kline later scored on a passed ball to put the Marauders in front, 2-0.
Jeff Heisey drove in a run in the third, and Phelan blew the game open in the top of the sixth when he plated Chris Edgar and Heisey with an two-run double. The Marauders led 6-1 in the seventh, but Washington Adventist (5-4) scored three off reliever Zack Eckley. It marked the first runs he allowed this season.
Game two was a much tighter affair. The Marauders again took an early lead when McCormick singled and later scored on a Mike August single. Washington Adventist tied the game in the third, but in the fourth, the Marauders retook the lead on a two-run blast from redshirt freshman Zach Stone. Heisey gave the Marauders a 4-1 lead in the sixth with an RBI double.
That was plenty of run support for Barton. The freshman surrendered one run in the sixth but worked a 1-2-3 seventh inning to earn his second win in as many decisions. He scattered seven hits and two walks and struck out seven in the complete game effort.
Stone, Heisey and August all finished with two hits. Phelan walked twice and scored two runs.
Millersville begins PSAC Eastern Division play Friday at Marauder Park against preseason favorite West Chester. Game one of the doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m.
