Clermont, Fla. – The Millersville softball team finished its spring trip with two more wins Friday. The Marauders accepted a forfeit by Northern State (S.D.) before they ousted Nyack College 8-0 in five innings. They would finish the day with a tough loss to West Virginia Wesleyan but improved the early 0-3 record to a solid 7-5 mark before heading home.
Millersville (7-5) received an extra practice session early Friday morning after Northern State (5-7) didn't show up to the field.
The Marauders showed their eagerness to play in the following game against Nyack College (0-2), scoring often to oust the Warriors in five innings.
Alicia Hughes (5-2) continued to stay hot, giving up just two hits with five strikeouts in her second shutout of the year. Since losing her first two decisions, Hughes has won five-straight with a team-leading 30 strikeouts and 2.78 ERA.
Kelly Fitzgerald led the team with two hits, two runs and four RBIs. She tripled in the third inning to increase Millersville's lead to 3-0.
The margin was pushed to 4-0 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning.
The Marauders scored four more to go up eight and end the game with a mercy rule before three outs were collected by the Warriors.
The final game of the trip turned into a defensive battle with the Bobcats (17-3).
W.Va. Wesleyan entered the game on a six-game winning streak and showed why it was going to be a tough out in the Clermont finale.
The fourth inning was a back breaker for Millersville, giving up three runs on four hits, two of which were doubles.
The Bobcats threatened in the first two innings to put several runs up on the board.
Sarah Signore (1-2) stayed strong in the first inning with runners on second and third and only one out. She was able to get out of the inning forcing the next two batters into pop flies and stranding both runners on base.
W.Va. Wesleyan was able to pick up one run in the second to hold a 1-0 edge before breaking it loose in the fourth. A few misjudged plays helped the Bobcats earn its three runs to put the lead to 4-0 and the eventual win.
Deanna Schneiderreit found success at the plate for the Marauders, hitting three singles in three at bats.
Millersville will get a few days of rest after traveling back to Pennsylvania before it hosts Georgian Court in its home opener Wednesday, March 16. The doubleheader is slated to start at 3 p.m.
