Shane Smith entered the weekend ranked sixth in the nation in falls, and he likely improved upon that standing Friday at the East Regional Duals. Smith pinned each of his three opponents in the first roud. As a team, however, the Marauders posted a 1-2 record.
Millersville, now 2-8 overall, defeated Campbell 26-21 in the opening round but then fell 30-16 to Gardner-Webb and 40-6 to Liberty.
Against Campbell, the Marauders surrendered six points immediately with a forfeit at 125 pounds. They fell behind 10-0 after a major decision at 133. But
Mike Greck started Millersville's comeback with a fall over Brad Merriman in 2:24.
Aaron Trimpey followed with a pin of Darien Peele at 4:00.
Brandon Vernalli scored the first of his two wins on the day at 165 pounds. Smith then took down Peter Domis in just 28 seconds. 197-pound
Daniel Cox registered a 17-2 tech fall--Millersville's first of the season.
The Marauders did not fare as well against Gardner-Webb in round two. The Bulldogs won the first five matches until Vernalli notched a 15-2 major decision against Justin Guthrie. In the next weight class, Smith needed just 43 seconds to pin Erin O'Dell. Heavyweight Bradley Ladd scored Millersville's final points win a pin of Tyler Arrowood in 1:35.
Smith accounted for Millersville's only six points against Liberty. The junior scored his 17th pin of the season and improved to 25-9 by pinning Eli Sanchez in 1:21. Six of his last seven victories have come by fall. He now has 80 career victories, which places him in a tie for 18th in school history.
Millersville is now off until Feb. 15 when it hosts York at Pucillo Gymnasium.
