Box Score West Chester, Pa. – After a loss to University of the Sciences a day earlier, Millersville responded in its second game at the Carol Eckman Classic by defeating Molloy 59-55. The win was head coach
Mary Fleig's 400th at Millersville. Redshirt junior
Aurielle Mosley led the way with 21 points and 14 rebounds.
Coach Fleig, now with 522 career coaching wins, became the first Millersville coach in any sport to reach the 400 win total. Fleig is ranked 43rd among all active head coaches in all divisions of the NCAA in win total.
Millersville (7-3) took a 28-23 lead through the first 20 minutes over Molloy (5-6). The Lions quickly scored five unanswered points to start the second half to tie the game at 28-28 for what was an offensive battle in the final 20 minutes.
Millersville took a 36-32 lead early in the second half, but the game was never more than a field goal out of reach for either team until Molloy took a five point lead with 3:29 remaining. The Lions' Nicole Arnone knocked down a jumper to give Molloy a 53-48 lead.
Senior
Sophia Waters, who was struggling from behind the arc most of the game, drained a deep three-point bucket to bring Millersville within two points, down 53-51.
Molloy missed its next shot to give the Marauders a chance to tie or take the lead. Mosley kicked it out to
Leola Pinkney, who drove to the bucket and made good on a layup to tie the game at 53-53 with 2:19 remaining. Two made foul shots and a bucket later, Millersville found itself on a 9-0 run to take a 57-53 lead with 21 seconds remaining.
The Lions's Amanda Bartlett scored with 12 seconds left to make it a 57-55 Marauder lead.
Mashira Newman was fouled on the following trip. Newman made her first foul shot, but missed second. Mosley collected the rebound with five seconds remaining for a chance to give Millersville a four point cushion. Mosley made the first to put the Marauders up, 59-55. The second attempt was missed, but the Lions turned the ball over to end the game.
Mosley finished the game with her sixth double-double of the season. She scored a season-high 21 points going 10-of-17 from the field while collecting 14 rebounds. Waters added 15 points, and Newman added 10.
Gabrielle Styles collected 11 rebounds.
Millersville and Coach Fleig are now 3-0 all-time against Molloy.
The Marauders close out the 2011 year with a 7-3 record. Millersville travels to California (Jan. 6) and Indiana (Pa.) (Jan. 7) for its final PSAC Western swing. The Marauders Vulcans tip at 5:30 p.m.
