Box Score West Chester, Pa. – The University of the Sciences women's basketball team made its first appearance in the Carol Eckman Classic hosted by West Chester University Friday and defeated Millersville 61-54 to end the Marauders 12-game winning streak at the tournament.
Millersville (6-3) hit the game's first bucket on a jumper by
Mashira Newman to take the opening lead. USciences (6-4) then went on a 15-5 run largely on the part of Becca Ruggear, who scored nine of the Devils' opening 15 points. The Marauders then went on a 7-0 run to cut USciences' lead to 15-14 with nine minutes remaining in the first half.
The Devils extended their lead to 10, 33-23, with just over two minutes remaining for their largest lead of the half. Newman then hit a three for the Marauders to cut the lead back to seven, down 33-26. USciences kept its seven point lead into the break as both teams missed shots and caused turnovers in the final two minutes.
Ruggear, scoring 13 points in the first half, scored back-to-back layups for the Devils to open the second half to give USciences a 39-28 lead. Ruggear finished the game with a career-high 23 points.
The Devils made another 15-5 run to open the second half to create their largest lead of the game, 48-33, with 12:08 remaining in the game.
Sophia Waters came off the bench, missing her first start of the season, and sparked a late Millersville surge. Waters drained a three-point shot to cut the Devils' lead back to 12. The Marauders the lead down to just six points, down 56-50, with 3:44 remaining. Waters led the surge with seven points, while
Aurielle Mosley hit four crucial free throws, including the two points to bring Millersville within six.
USciences continued to cause Millersville problems down the final stretch, extending its lead back to 11, 61-50 with under two minutes remaining. The Marauders missed its final four shots, all from behind the arc, to fall to the Devils 61-54. Millersville shot just five-for-26 from behind the arc.
Newman led the Marauders with 13 points and six steals. Mosley and Waters each finished with 10 points.
Gabrielle Styles led Millersville with 11 rebounds, while scoring seven points.
Millersville has now lost two-straight to USciences in as many seasons after starting 5-0 in the series.
The Marauders continue action tomorrow at the Carol Eckman Classic at 1 p.m., when they take on Molloy. MSBN will have the call starting at 12:45 p.m.
