Mosley, Newman Lead Second Half Surge Past Lakers

Millersville, Pa. – The Millersville women's basketball team came alive in the second half after trailing 24-22 at the break to beat Mercyhurst in the  season opener by a score of 62-48. Redshirt juniors Aurielle Mosley and Mashira Newman each had double figures in the second half to lead the Marauders.

Millersville (1-0, 1-0 PSAC) and Mercyhurst (0-3, 0-1 PSAC) needed some time to shake off some early-seaosn rust, committing a combined 25 turnovers in the first half. The Marauders had their largest lead at four, up 13-9, in the first half with 11:32 remaining before a five minute span of scoreless basketball was played. The teams combined for 11 missed shots and nine turnovers before the Lakers cut the Millersville lead to 13:11 at the six-minute mark.

Mercyhurst then went on a 13-9 run to take a 24-22 at the break. Megan Hoffman gave the Lakers its largest lead of the first session with four minutes remaining when she drained her second three-point shot of the game to give Mercyhurst a six-point advantage, up 21-15. Hoffman led all scorers with nine points, going three-for-six from behind the arc, in the first half.

Millersville quickly responded to start the second half. Newman led the Marauders on a break and dished it to Mosley for an easy bucket in the paint to tie the game at 24-24. On Millersville's next possession Mosley returned the favor with a pass out to Newman who drained a three to give the Marauders their first lead since the 5:50 mark of the first half.

The Lakers struggled in the opening minutes of second half missing their first seven shots. Millersville took an eight point lead before Mercyhurst scored its first field goal at the 15:27 mark to cut the Marauder lead to 32-26. Millersville extended its lead to 10 before the Lakers scored on five of their next seven possessions to come within three, down 40-37 with 8:26 to play.

The Marauders took over the final eight minutes and didn't look back, extending its lead to 18 with 1:28 remaining. Newman finished the game with 19 points, 4-for-6 from behind the arc and eight assists. She scored twelve of her 19 points in the second half, including 3-for-3 from the three-point line.

Mosley collected her 20th career double-double by scoring double figures in the second half. She finished the game with 16 points and 13 rebounds, and added three assists, a block and a steal. Senior Gabrielle Styles led the team with five steals and four blocks­, while also collecting nine point and 11 boards.

Head coach Mary Fleig improved to 18-4, 15-1 at home, in season openers with today's win over the Lakers.

Millersville is back in action tomorrow, Nov. 20 when it hosts Slippery Rock at 1 p.m. at Pucillo Gymnasium for Alumni Day.
