VULCANS SCORE FOUR IN SECOND HALF TO TOP RED RAIDERS TO ADVANCE
It was a tale of two halves for California (Pa.) in the Atlantic Regional Semifinals. Shippensburg dominated the first half with a commanding 11-1 shot advantage. Despite the Red Raiders' continuous pressure in the offensive zone the Vulcans were able to keep the game scoreless for much of the side. Shippensburg finally cashed in on a tap in by Casey Bellamy off a blocked shot in the final minute of the first half to give the Red Raiders a 1-0 lead at the break.
The Vulcans woke up in the second half and were sparked from a beautifully placed goal in the 55th minute to knot the game at 1-1. Edin Sabic cued up a free kick from 40 yards out and sent in a bullet to beat Shippensburg's goalkeeper clean to the upper right corner of the goal. CalU responded again five minutes on a 1 on 2 rush. Tyler Woolum fired the shot from just outside the box between two defenders to ripple the net for a 2-1 Vulcans' lead.
Shippensburg tied the game on a spectacular play of its own off a free kick in the 66th minute. Oil Templeton crossed the ball from 30 yards out to the far side finding Austin Hill. Hill headed the ball to the center to find Alex Supplee who headed it into the goal, not allowing the ball to touch the ground until it cross the goal line.
CalU scored twice more in the final 20 minutes on goals by Chris Hunkele (71') and Ryan Slaby (80') to pull away for an eventual 4-2 win to advance to the championship game.
MARAUDERS BLANK LAKERS TO REACH REGIONAL FINALS
Mercyhurst traveled to Millersvile, Pa., for the second time this season looking for a better result than it did on Oct. 15. The Lakers came to play, outshooting the Marauders in both sessions by a total margin of 23-10. But a redshirt freshman for Millersville shut the door on the Lakers attack all night long. Goalkeeper Brad Benzing made 11 saves, a career-high, on the night to collect his fourth-straight shutout, third-straight in the post season.
The only goal of the game came in the 38th minute. Senior Eric Pepper sent in a corner from the far side. The ball carried over 6-5 Aaron Roland to find freshman Brian Dingle. Dingle headed the ball into the net for his first collegiate college to give Millersville a 1-0 lead and eventual win. Pepper recorded his seventh assist of the season and the 15th of his career to move him to seventh all-time in program history.
The Lakers continued to dominate the offensive zone in the second half with a 12-3 shot advantage. Millersville only scoring opportunity came late in the half when Pat Baffuto got away from a Mercyhurst defender on the baseline and fed the ball to the center of the box. Andrew Dukes reached for the ball and tapped it just wide.
Mercyhurst earned several corner kicks in the waning minutes to put the Marauders on edge. Benzing stood tall making several punch-outs to ward off any scoring threats by the Lakers. Millersville held on to the 1-0 lead to advance to its second Atlantic Regional Championship game in four years, both on its home turf.
THEY MEET AGAIN
For the third time this season, second time in 10 days, CalU and Millersville will meet on the pitch. The Marauders have outscored the Vulcans by a margin of 5-0 this season. Millersville took down CalU on the road in the regular season by a score of 1-0 before blanking them in the PSAC Semifinals at home by a score of 4-0.
Millersville holds a lifetime edge of 12-11-2 over the Vulcans and have only lost once out of eight meetings since head coach Steve Widdowson took over in 2007.
CalU and Millersville met in the first round of the 2008 NCAA Atlantic Regional, also at Chryst Field at Biemsderfer Stadium, where the Marauders came away with a 3-0 win over the Vulcans to reach the Atlantic Regional Championship game for the first time. That win came six days after Millersville lost the PSAC Championship game to CalU by a score of 3-2.
The winner of the Atlantic Regional will meet the winner of the Midwest Regional in the NCAA Quarterfinals next Saturday, Nov. 19 at a place to be determined.
