Millersville, Pa. – The Millersville field hockey tean ended its 2011 season in a thriller. Freshman Rachel Dickinson tied the game at 1-1 with two minutes in regulation to force overtime. Unfortunately, East Stroudsburg held on to win in strokes to leave Chryst Field at Biemsderfer Stadium with a 2-1 win.
East Stroudsburg (8-10, 3-7 PSAC East) opened up the scoring in the eighth minute. The Warriors received a penalty stroke for a foul by a Marauder defender. Lucrezia Manzione was selected to take the stroke for East Stroudsburg. Manzione fired it low and to the left to beat Millersville's goalkeeper Sarah Dickinson.
The game remained 1-0 in favor of the Warriors heading into the break despite the Marauders outshooting East Stroudsburg by a margin of 6-3 in the side.
Millersville (7-11, 1-9 PSAC East) turned on the offensive pressure in the second half, outshooting the Warriors by a 9-4 margin. The Marauders also held a 10-4 advantage in penalty corners. Despite the pressure Millersville could not find a response for much of the second half.
In the 68th minute, the Marauders received a penalty corner. Freshman Sarah Bomberger set up at the baseline and sent the ball in to freshman Rachel Dickinson. Rachel knocked the ball down and fired in a slap shot from just inside the circle to beat the Warriors' goalkeeper and tie the game at 1-1 with two minutes to play. The game-tying goal was Rachel's fourth of the season to tie her for the team high and gave her a team-leading 10 points.
The match heated up in the first overtime with both teams developing breakaways and scoring opportunities, but the defenses stepped up big for both squads to only allowing one shot on goal between the teams in the period.
In the second overtime, the goalkeepers shined. Millersville's Sarah Dickinson made four of her three saves, while East Stroudsburg's Maureen Ordnung made three of her nine saves in the game in the second overtime to send the contest into strokes.
The Marauders opted to go with freshman Lauren Sotzin in goal for the stroke off. The Warriors scored on their first two attempts, while Millersville failed on its first three attempts. Sotzin stonewalled the next two Warriors to give the Marauders a chance.
Freshman Katelyn Zapp scored on Millersville's fourth attempt to make it two goals to one in favor of the Warriors. The Marauders failed on their fifth attempt, giving East Stroudsburg a 2-1 win in strokes.
Two Millersville seniors were recognized before the contest as they ended their Marauder careers today. Senior back Tori Bentzel, who was named to the 2008 womensfieldhockey.com's All-Rookie Team, and senior Sarah Dickinson played their final games in a Millersville uniform. Dickinson finished her career with 461 saves and 15 shutouts over 70 starts since stepping on campus in 2008.
The Marauders wrapped up their season with a 7-11 overall record and a 1-9 record in the PSAC East.
