Box Score

Millersville, Pa. – The No. 9 Millersville field hockey team put 11 shots on goal against Bellarmine on Sunday, but the Knight's goalkeeper Katie Lange shut down Millersville in the first 67 minutes to leave Chryst Field at Biemsderfer Stadium with a 4-1 win.

Bellarmine (8-3), who has averaged 5.6 goals per game, scored the opening goal in the 12th minute of play.  Lauren Schmeing received a penalty corner pass and slapped it over to Ellen West. West shot the ball from just inside the box and it found its way into the cage to give the Knights a 1-0 lead.

Millersville (7-9) outshot Bellarmine by a 10-4 margin in the first side, but it was unable to put anything past Lange. The game went into the break with the Knights up, 1-0.

Five minutes into the second half, Bellarmine found its second goal of the game. Rachel Walz collected a pass from a penalty corner and then moved away from a Millersville defender. Walz fired it through a crowd of players to extend the Knights' lead to 2-0.

In the 63rd minute, Walz found the back of the goal for the second time in the half. In similar fashion, Walz fired a shot from top of the circle, missing everyone in front, to put Bellarmine up 3-0.

Two minutes later, West found her second goal of the game to increase the Knights' lead to 4-0 with five minutes to play in regulation. West collected a rebound off a blocked pass to beat Millersville's goalie.

The Maraurders got on the board in the last three minute of play. Mary Atkins sent in a penalty corner that found teammate Alicia Youtz. Youtz fired in a shot that found Atkins, who moved into the front of the goal, to deflect it in to cut Bellarmine's lead to 4-1.

The Knights' held on to the three-goal lead to pick up their eighth win of the season. Goalkeeper Lange made 11 saves on 12 shots on goal to earn the victory.

Millersville travels to Long Island, N.Y., on Wednesday, Oct. 19 to take on No. 6 C.W. Post. The Marauders defeated the Pioneers at home on Sept. 27 by a score of 1-0. The contest is slated to begin at 4 p.m.
