GAME OVERVIEW
• Millersville hosts longtime PSAC East rival Kutztown under the lights Saturday evening. It's the Marauders second night game of the season, and they won the first night game at Lock Haven. The last night game played at Biemesderfer Stadium was against Shippensburg on Sept. 26, 2009. The Marauders lost that game to the eventual PSAC Champions, 63-24. Millersville is 34-14 all-time in night games but has won just two of its last six dating back to 2007.
• Millersville turned in a solid defensive effort against a red-hot C.W. Post offense last week in a 24-6 loss. Of C.W. Post's 17 offensive possessions, 10 started inside Millersville territory. C.W. Post had totaled over 400 yards of offense against both West Chester and Shippensburg the previous two weeks, but Millersville held it to 314. Pat Maloney and Gary Tillman both totaled seven tackles to lead the team. Doug Henninger, Ryan Christian and Jordan Rigby all registered sacks. The Marauders totaled a season-high 10.0 tackles for loss. Millersville also registered 3.0 sacks, which matched a season high. The Marauders have 11 sacks through five games, putting them on pace for 20. No Millersville defense has recorded 20 sacks in a season since 2005.
• The Marauders allowed 497 yards of offense to W.Va. Wesleyan and 498 to Bloomsburg (both nationally ranked teams) but has not allowed more than 330 to any other team this season. The last two weeks, the Marauders have surrendered an average of 268.5 yards of total offense. The Marauders now rank 10th in the PSAC in total defense and 11th against both the run and the pass.
• One of the keys to the defense has been the play of Daniel Jones at defensive end. He moved from linebacker to the line just before the start of this season and now leads the team with 6.0 tackles for loss. He has at least one tackle for loss in five of six games and has recorded 3.5 in the last three weeks. He's one of nine Marauders have registered a sack this season. Jones leads all defensive linemen with 18 tackles. The team leader in stops is Pat Maloney with 39. Maloney has tied for the team lead or led the team in tackles in 10 of the team's last 11 games dating to last season.
• With the defense improving, the Marauders look to a developing offense for increased production. The offense ranks 16th in the PSAC in scoring, total offense and pass offense. It ranks 15th in rushing offense. Millersville ranks 149th out of 150 Division II teams in total offense.
• Looking for a spark, the coaches inserted true freshman Sean Quarterman into last week's game against C.W. Post. He completed his first pass--a 14-yarder to Dominic Sanders--and the team scored on his first drive. However, he missed on his next six passes. Coaches will continue to give Quarterman opportunities to play each game this season.
• Playing in the place of an injured Mike Jones, Marquis White, who had played cornerback in the previous two games, received his first career start and totaled 65 yards on 17 carries including a 52-yard run--the team's longest run from scrimmage this season. White gained 96 yards but fumbled the ball twice and incured 31 yards in losses.
• There are plenty of connections between the Millersville and Kutztown programs. Kutztown's offensive coordinator Drew Folmar was the most accomplished passer in Millersville history. From 1997-2000, Folmar threw for 10,483 yards, completed 803-of-1,320 attempts and threw 92 touchdowns. He was a finalist for the Harlon Hill award during his time with the Marauders as well. He was an assistant coach at Millersville from 2003-2007.
• Millersville wide receiver coach Dave Keeny was is a Kutztown graduate and was the program's head coach from 1998-2005. Keeny became the third winningest coach in school history during his tenure.
• Kutztown is the third nationally-ranked team Millersville has faced this season. W.Va. Wesleyan and Bloomsburg beat the Marauders by a combined 101-10. The last time the Marauders defeated a nationally-ranked team was Nov. 10, 2001. The win came over No. 2-ranked Indiana (Pa.). at home.
ABOUT THE SERIES
• Millersville holds a commanding 56-24-3 lead in the all-time series that dates to 1903. Kutztown won last year's game but only just. The Golden Bears entered the 2010 game unbeaten, but Millersville, using 192 receiving yards and two touchdowns from Jamal Smith kept the game close until the final minute. Kevin Morton threw for 350 yards and four TD's.
• Kutztown has emerged as a PSAC East power in the last two seasons, but Millersville has won four of the last seven games. The Marauders' last win came by a 41-35 score in a triple-overtime thriller at home in 2009. Since 2007, no game has been decided by more than 10 points and two games have gone into overtime.
• With 83 meetings, Millersville has played Kutztown more than any other opponent in its history. The Marauders also have more wins over Kutztown than any other opponent and its .693 winning percentage is second only to their winning percentage against Cheyney (.910).
THE HEAD COACHES
• Millersville's Greg Colby is in his fourth season as head coach. He is trying to rebuild a program that has not posted a winning season since 2000. Before coming to Millersville, he spent most of his career as an assistant at the Division I level. From 1979-86, he was the head coach at Schlarman High School and Naperville High School in Illinois. While at Schlarman, Colby led the team to back-to-back Illinois High School 2-A State Championships (1981-82).
• Colby has an impressive resume. He came to Millersville after serving as the defensive coordinator at Northwestern from 2002-07 during which time the Wildcats posted three-straight six-win seasons for the first time in 70 years. He was also the defensive coordinator at Kent State for four seasons and served as a defensive assistant at Michigan State under Nick Saban and at Illinois under Lou Tepper.
• Raymond Monica is the 14th coach in Kutztown history and in 2010, he led the team to a record-setting season that including its first 10-win season and first NCAA playoff appearance. Monica, now in his 11th season, is 32-28 in his career. He arrived at Kutztown after serving as the defensive coordinator at Temple for eight seasons. He also coached nine seasons at North Alabama. He was on staff for three NCAA Division II Championships.
SCOUTING THE GOLDEN BEARS
• Behind 2010 PSAC East Offensive Player of the Year Kevin Morton, Kutztown boasts the most dynamic offense in the PSAC. Morton leads the league with 19 touchdown passes, is second in passing efficiency (158.7) and third in passing average (268.7). Kutztown leads the PSAC in scoring offense (40.8) and total offense (504.3). It ranks third nationally in first downs, sixth in total offense and eighth in scoring offense.
• The Golden Bears can attack on both the ground and through the air. Their run game ranks 14th in the country (230.2) per game. Robbie Frey ranks third in the PSAC with 114.3 yards per game. The top receiver for Morton is Erik Frazier, who is averaging 5.0 catches and 67.8 yards per game. He ranks in the top 10 in the PSAC in both categories.
• The only weakness of the Kutztown offense is that it can be mistake prone. Morton has thrown 10 interceptions, and while the team has committed 13 turnovers, it is +5 in turnover margin thanks to a league-best 13 interceptions.
• Kutztown has scored more than 35 points in all but one game. That was team's only loss of the year. In that game, Shippensburg rushed for 280 yards and threw for 268. Morton threw four picks in the game and Kutztown turned the ball over five times.
• The Kutztown defense hasn't been nearly as impressive statistically. It ranks 13th in the PSAC in total defense, allowing 424.2 yards per game. The 284.5 yards per game allowed passing is 16th in the league. Leading tackler Andrew Hodges averages 8.8 stops per game and ranks fourth in the PSAC.
• Alex DiNolfi's five interceptions are a leauge-best and Brett Moss' five sacks rank fourth in the PSAC.
• Last week, Kutztown defeated East Stroudsburg 49-32. Frey rushed for 158 and two scores, but Josh Mastromatto was named PSAC East Offensive Player of the Week for 96 yards rushing and 57 yards receiving on seven catches. He also totaled 138 yards on two kick returns, returning one 100 yards for a touchdown. He finished with 291 all-purpose yards.
THE LAST TIME OUT FOR THE MARAUDERS
• After five weeks on the road, Millersville played its first home game of the season Saturday, but it was C.W. Post that looked like the home team. A strong defensive effort was for naught as the Marauders committed four turnovers--three inside their own territory--and C.W. Post capitalized for a 24-6 win.
• Millersville (2-4, 1-2 PSAC East) received an early spark from Marquis White, who, playing in his first game at running back, led the team with 65 yards and broke off a 52-yard TD run in the second. In the previous two games, White had seen time at cornerback.
• The Marauders also tried two different quarterbacks. Starter Dan Miller went 5-for-10 for 27 yards and an interception. Freshman Sean Quarterman completed his first pass but missed on his next six. The two were sacked a total of six times.
• Millersville finished with 104 yards of offense including 41 through the air--the fewest by a Marauder team since totaling 25 on Oct. 27, 2007 versus Cheyney. Dominic Sanders and Brent Collins evenly split the six receptions.
• The Marauder defense was handcuffed by field position all game. C.W. Post (3-3, 3-0 PSAC East) started 10 of its 17 offensive drives inside Millersville territory. After surrendering an opening drive touchdown to the Pioneers, the Marauder defense was staunch. The next Pioneer drive ended when Dan McClellan picked off a pass from Steve Laurino in the end zone.
• On the next six drives, Millersville forced three punts, recovered a fumble and turned over the Pioneers on downs. The Pioneers needed a short field to score its only second quarter touchdown, which gave them a 14-6 lead with 8:31 to go in the half.
• The Pioneers buit the lead after recovering a White fumble at the Millersville 10 yard line. On third and goal, Laurino scrambled for nine yards and pay dirt. Millersville's next drive went three-and-out, and C.W. Post received the ball at the Millersville 49. A short drive ended in a field goal and a 24-6 advantage. Millersville picked up just three first downs over the final quarter and a half.
• Laurino scored two of his team's three touchdowns and rushed for 131 yards on 28 totes. He also threw for 133 yards on 9-of-19 passing. Millersville sacked him three times.
• C.W. The Marauders totaled nine tackles for loss as a team.
