No. 23 Marauders Cruise Past West Chester in Conference Clash

Box Score

Millersville, Pa. – For the second time this season, No. 23 Millersville saw double-figure performances from five players, and on Saturday, the Marauders rolled past West Chester 81-59 inside Pucillo Gymnasium. The Golden Rams (12-4, 3-1) suffered their first league loss of the season while Millersville notched its third-consecutive PSAC Eastern Division victory.

The squads entered the contest with the same purpose—gaining the upper hand in the PSAC East race. There are now four teams in the East with 3-1 records.

The Marauders (13-3, 3-1) took the lead at the 8:30 mark of the first period off of a pair of Mashira Newman free throws and never let the advantage slip out of their grasp. Millersville's pressure-filled defense was in full effect as the club held West Chester to a season-low 18.2 shooting percentage in the half.

West Chester's shooting woes were evident and included 5-of-12 shooting (41.7 percent) from the free throw line. Millersville capped off the last five minutes of the first half with a 12-2 run and entered the break with a 36-21 lead.

Head coach Mary Fleig's bunch opened the first three minutes of the second period with a 9-0 run and exploded in front by 24 points. West Chester was stopped in its tracks by Millersville's 46.7 shooting percentage from the floor and could not shorten its deficit to fewer than 21.

The Golden Rams committed 13 fouls in the second half alone and the Marauders made the trips to the foul line worth their while. Millersville knocked down 15-of-19 shots from the charity stripe in the half (21-of-28 in the game).

Despite committing 15 turnovers in the first half, MU only turned the ball over eight times in the second. The Marauders, in turn, generated 11 West Chester turnovers and nabbed six steals en route to their 45-point half.

Senior Domonique Stroman registered her third double-double of the season with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore Aurielle Mosley notched her seventh of the season by recording a game-high 17 rebounds--10 on the offensive end--and 12 points.

Newman led all scorers with 19 points and dished out a game-high five assists. Junior Gabrielle Styles just missed a double-double performance with nine rebounds and a career-high 14 points. Sophomore Carrie Sheffey also had a career day with 10 points.

The Marauders hit the road for the first time in three games when they travel to East Stroudsburg on Wednesday, Jan. 26. Game time against the Warriors is set for 6 p.m.
