Indiana, Pa. – The Millersville field hockey team earned a season-opening victory for the first time since 2004 by silencing No.10 Bentley with a 4-0 shutout on Saturday afternoon at Miller Stadium in Indiana, Pa.
The Marauders (1-0), which finished the 2009 season ranked No. 10 in the country, handed the Falcons (0-2) their second loss in as many days. The Falcons lost to Indiana (Pa.) 2-1 in overtime Saturday.
In the first game of her collegiate career,
Tricia Jackson found the back of the cage off of a pass from
Paige Morrison to put Millersville on the board 22:14 into the action. Sophomore
Brittany Anderson and freshman
Champayne Hess connected soon after to put the Marauders up two.
Tallying the third and final goal of the half,
Ekom Enyong found her way around Bentley's Kaitlyn Riley with 35 seconds remaining. Hess was credited with the helper.
Millersville held Bentley to zero corners in the first half and registered eight of its own. The Marauders also out-shot the nationally ranked Falcons by a 9-1 margin.
The Marauders controlled the pace of the second half, totaling three shots and keeping Bentley without one. Twenty-seven minutes into second-period action, senior
Emily Woodland scored Millersville's fourth goal off of a pass from
Melissa McCarthy.
Bentley recorded one shot on goal—registered by Beth Maguire—throughout the 70 minutes and took one corner to Millersville's 17.
Junior goalkeeper
Sara Dickinson recorded one save on the day. Sophomore
Keily Doehring saw action but did not see any shots come her way.
The Marauders return to action on Labor Day with an 11 a.m. match-up against No. 3 UMass Lowell in Indiana, Pa.
