Game 2
Millersville, Pa. – The Millersville University softball team couldn't overcome strong outings by Lock Haven pitchers Becca Bailey and Sarah Morse in dropping a doubleheader at the Millersville University Softball Field on Wednesday afternoon. The Lady Eagles shut down the Marauder bats in picking up 5-2 and 2-0 victories.
Lock Haven (15-12) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in game one behind Erin Clary's sacrifice fly in the third. Clary had a prime RBI opportunity after Brittany Favazza tripled to lead off the inning and Clary, the nine hole hitter, cashed in.
Another triple boosted the defending NCAA Division II National Champions in the fourth. This time it came off the bat of Meredith Morris and it plated two runs for a 3-0 advantage. The lead went to 5-0 in the fifth on a two-run double from Brittany Muthard.
The Marauders (16-19) finally answered in their half of the fifth on a
Lindsay Hosier two-run double. Hosier slapped a ball just inside the bag at third which rolled all the way to the corner.
Casey Coker and
Deanna Schneiderreit scored on the hit, which made it 5-2.
Millersville would not be able to shave any more runs off the lead against LHU starter Becca Bailey (10-7). Bailey went the distance and struck out eight. She allowed just four Millersville hits, and only two after the first inning.
Sarah Signore (6-6) pitched relatively well, but was hurt by a few balls that found open field. Signore did not walk a batter and struck out seven.
Runs were at a premium in game two, with Lock Haven picking up a pair in the fourth to account for the only scoring of the ballgame. An error by
Jamie Motsko kept the Lady Eagle bats alive and Amanda Gutmaker laced the first pitch she saw through the left side. The hit brought home Kirsten Labant and Meredith Morris for a 2-0 lead.
Millersville's bats had no answer for Lock Haven's Sarah Morse. Morse improved to 5-4 on the season by giving up five hits in 4.2 innings. Bailey came on to close the game out and did not allow a hit or a baserunner in her 2.1 innings of work. Bailey earned her first save of the season in the victory.
Alicia Hughes was just as good in the circle for the Marauders. Hughes pitched her second complete game in two days and did not allow an earned run in the contest. Not much for overpowering opposing hitters, Hughes finished with just one strikeout, but she was able to induce the Lady Eagles into 13 groundouts.
Millersville will try to get back in the win column against Kutztown on Friday afternoon in a PSAC Eastern Division road doubleheader. The Marauders then return home to face Slippery Rock on Saturday afternoon. Saturday's games mark family day for the Marauders and there will be another special event as well. The team will join forces with the Millersville ROTC by hosting an event called, “Going to Bat For Our Wounded Soldiers.” To learn more about the event,
