Philadelphia, Pa. — With 10 games in six days, it's going to feel like Spring Break all over again for the Millersville University softball team. The Marauders started their busy week on the right side of the ledger, though, picking up wins of 4-2 and 7-6 against the homestanding University of the Sciences in Philadelphia on Tuesday afternoon.
Three runs over the final two innings capped the Marauders' (16-17) comeback in game one.
Kelly Fitzgerald began the rally in the sixth with a lead-off single. She was relieved of her running duties by
Keena Elbin and Elbin would later score the tying run on an error by Devils' (8-12) second baseman Samantha Tu.
Sarah Signore gave Millersville a 3-2 lead with an RBI fielder's choice that plated
Jill Golomboski. Starting pitcher
Alicia Hughes held down the MU lead in the sixth before her offense tacked on another run in the seventh after Tu committed her second error of the game. In all, the Devils made five errors in the game, saddling reliever Julie Shaw (0-3) with the tough luck loss.
Hughes and USP starter Courtney Spina actually had a pretty good pitching battle going on throughout the early stages of the game. Spina only allowed three hits in four innings of work and struck out five before turning the game over to Shaw. Hughes (5-5), who threw her sixth complete game of the season, struck out three and threw a six-hitter.
Golomboski scored twice and had two of Millersville's six hits.
Casey Coker also had a 2-for-3 game and made 17 putouts from her first base position.
The Marauders were forced to pull out a cardiac win in game two as well. Hosier and
Ally Homa drew back-to-back walks to start the game. A double steal by Millersville ended in disaster for USP as Hosier came across to score on an error by catcher Mia Crotti. MU seized a 2-0 lead later in the inning when Golomboski knocked in Homa.
USP, not about to roll over, answered with three runs in the bottom half of the first. The big blow against MU starter
Brittany Peterson was Spina's two-run triple. The Devils built on their three run inning, eventually running the advantage out to 5-2.
Millersville used five runs over the final three innings —including two in the seventh—to snag the win from USP. With two outs and
Anna Libby occupying first base, Coker drove a pitch for a double that plated the freshman. The Devils' Tu, haunted by errors in game one and only inserted into game two in the sixth inning, botched another ball, allowing Coker to come across the plate with the lead run.
Coker finished the doubleheader with four hits, while
Jamie Motsko had a 2-for-4 game at the dish in the nightcap. Hosier and Homa both scored twice in the victory and Hosier stole three bases on the afternoon. The senior is now a perfect 19-for-19 in stolen base attempts.
Courtney Eckman (5-6) relieved Peterson and pitched five strong innings. Eckman scattered three hits and struck out two. The sophomore did not allow an earned run in her outing. Gina Murray (1-2), on in relief for USP, took the loss by giving up three runs (two earned) in two innings.
Millersville will try to jump back over .500 tomorrow afternoon as they host Lock Haven in non-conference action at the Millersville University Softball Field. The doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m.
