Kutztown, Pa. - Millersville entered the final weekend of the regular season needing to win a few games and get some help from Mansfield. On Friday, Mansfield did its part by splitting with East Stroudsburg, but No. 10-ranked Kutztown handed the Marauders an 8-4 loss in game one and a 21-1 loss in game two of the PSAC East doubleheader.
To reach the PSAC Tournament now, Millersville (20-25, 9-13 PSAC East) needs to sweep Saturday's home doubleheader against Kutztown (34-9, 16-6 PSAC East) and hope that Mansfield takes two more from East Stroudsburg.
Millersville's strategy on Friday was to send its top two hurlers to the mound and steal two wins on the road. Kutztown, however, showed why it was the PSAC's second-most productive offense, drilling Millersville for 29 runs in the doubleheader. In both games, though, Kutztown scored more runs than it totaled hits, taking advantage of 12 walks and six Millersville errors.
Millersville struck first in the opener, scoring one on a
Derek Kline RBI ground out. Kutztown came right back with two runs in the bottom of the inning and piled on with four in the third. Kline,
Miles Gallagher and
Ryan Chesler all drove in runs in a three-run fifth, but the damage had already been done.
Forrest Mengle (3-4) suffered the loss after allowing eight runs on six hits and three walks in six innings.
Game two went no better for the Millersville pitchers. Kutztown jumped on Kline (3-5) early, scoring six runs in the first and two more in the second to build an 8-0 lead and end Kline's day.
Seemingly everything went the way of the Golden Bears. In the third inning, the Marauders started with three hits and scored one run. The rally was halted in its tracks when Kutztown turned a triple play on a
Corey Phelan line drive.
That rally-killer was likely the final blow for the Marauders as they managed just two hits the rest of the game.
Gallagher totaled three hits in the loss. Kline and
Ryan McCormick each had two hits.
Saturday's doubleheader at the Millersville University Baseball Stadium is scheduled for 12 p.m. Fans can listen to the action live on
