East Stroudsburg, Pa. — Lindsay Hosier went 2-for-4 and knocked in a pair of runs to lead the visiting Millersville softball team to a 5-3 victory over East Stroudsburg in game two of a PSAC Eastern Division doubleheader on Friday afternoon. The Marauders were able to split the twinbill after the Warriors dominated game one, 8-1.
Following the disappointment of the opener, Millersville (14-17, 3-7 PSAC East) did something it has done a few times in conference play this season: open the game with a big inning. The Marauders posted a three-run first frame to put some distance between themselves and the homestanding Warriors (14-17, 4-4 PSAC East). Hosier led off with a double and quickly scored on a wacky play. With
Sarah Signore trying to sacrifice her over, ESU made two costly errors that allowed both Millersville players to cross the plate for the early 2-0 lead.
Kelly Fitzgerald singled and scored on an illegal pitch to finish off the top half of the first.
The Warriors got a run in the fourth when pitcher Caitlin Monahan brought home Alicea Ashe to cut the MU lead to 3-1. Millersville would get to Monahan (6-9) in the seventh.
Jamie Motsko walked and
Deanna Schneiderreit singled to end her day. Jackie Battaglino came on and tried to get out of the jam, but Hosier singled to left field to bring home the two freshmen.
ESU scored two runs of its own in the seventh, but
Alicia Hughes allowed nothing else, as she improved to 4-4 this season. Hughes registered just one strikeout in the win and scattered seven hits in going the distance.
Hosier and Fitzgerald combined to account for Millersville's only run of the opener, and it came rather quickly. Hosier led off with a single to left field and proceeded to steal her 14th base of the year to move into scoring position. Fitzgerald took care of the RBI opportunity with a single back up the middle.
The Black and Gold's lead was short-lived, however. The Warriors scored twice in the bottom of the first to take a lead they would not relinquish. Kara Darcey's double off of
Courtney Eckman drove in two and ESU was off and running.
East Stroudsburg, which took three of its four games against Millersville this season, pulled away with two more runs in the third and four in the sixth.
Darcey, Tegan Wendell, and Jamie Fisher all had two-hit games for the Warriors, while Fitzgerald registered half of Millersville's four hits with two of her own. Battaglino (8-8), a reliever in game two, started and picked up her eighth win of the season and struck out four in doing so.
Eckman (4-4) took the loss by allowing four earned runs in 2.2 innings.
Millersville travels across the state tonight for a Saturday doubleheader at Indiana (Pa.). First pitch tomorrow afternoon is slated for 1 p.m.
