Millersville, Pa. - On Saturday, April 10, Millersville softball will not only take on Slippery Rock and host its annual family day, but it will join forces with the Millersville ROTC by “Going to Bat For Our Wounded Soldiers.”

"Going to Bat For Our Wounded Soldiers" is a collaborative effort between the organizations to recognize military veterans and raise money and support for the Wounded Warrior Project. The festivities begin at 1 p.m. with the ROTC color guard presenting the colors for the National Anthem. There will be a 50/50 raffle as well as a speaker regarding the event. Donations will be collected throughout the day. All military veterans and their families are encouraged to attend. Admission is free.

Fans that cannot attend the game are still encouraged to support the worthy cause by donating through the softball team's online donation site. Access the site by clicking here.

The Wounded Warrior Project works to raise awareness and enlist the public's aid for the needs of severely injured service men and women, to help severely injured service members aid and assist each other, and to provide unique, direct programs and services to meet their needs. The Wounded Warrior Project offers many different services to help wounded warriors cope with combat stress or trauma and has a Resiliency Center full of useful information regarding Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PSTD).

One of the organization's most wide-reaching efforts is the Wounded Warrior Backpacks, which contain essential care and comfort items including clothing, toiletries, calling card and playing cards, all to make their hospital stay more comfortable. They are provided to severely wounded service members arriving at military trauma centers. Transitional Care Packs are sent directly to Iraq and Afghanistan to provide immediate comfort during a warrior's relocation to the U.S. military trauma center.

The project has volunteers and alumni the visit wounded soldiers in hospitals and work as peer mentors during rehabilitation. It also recognizes the needs and dedication of those giving care for the wounded, and provides assistant, counseling and retreats for them as well. Also, it teams with Disabled Sports USA to provide year-round sports programs for severely wounded service members from the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts and the global war on terrorism.

If the April 10 game is cancelled because of rain, the event will be rescheduled for Sunday, April 11 when Millersville plays Holy Family at 1 p.m.
