Game 2
Millersville, Pa. — Lindsay Hosier had a Senior Day to remember, as she belted out a grand slam and racked up five RBIs in the opener of a PSAC Eastern Division doubleheader with West Chester at the MU Softball Field. Unfortunately for Hosier's Marauders, the Golden Rams would come back to pull out a 10-8 victory in 10 innings.
Jamie Motsko picked the home squad up with a three-run blast late in game two, however, helping MU earn a split with a 9-6 win.
Hosier's fifth home run of the season turned a 3-2 deficit into a 6-3 Millersville (23-24, 5-11 PSAC East) lead in the bottom of the fourth. West Chester (29-13, 12-4 PSAC East), which had scored twice in the top of the fourth, rallied back into contention with back-to-back homers from Megan Harbaugh and Erin MacNamee, and re-took the lead with a pair of runs in the sixth.
Milersville would turn to Hosier again in the sixth to get the game tied. The senior's single plated
Deanna Schneiderreit, knotting the game at seven and forcing extra innings.
Scoring opportunities went by the wayside for both squads in the ninth inning. West Chester was able to get its first two batters on base, but MacNamee was pegged at the plate by
Jill Golomboski to keep the game tied. The Marauders then got Brooke Muth at home on a fielder's choice and
Courtney Eckman worked out of the jam by getting Kelsey Rapp to fly out to center fielder
Ally Homa.
The Marauders loaded the bases in the home half of the inning. Hosier nearly ended the game, but her line drive down the first base line was speared by Harbaugh, who turned and doubled off Homa to alleviate the threat.
West Chester seized a 10-7 lead in the 10th after Rapp scored via a wild pitch and Sam Ingersoll smacked a two-run home run. Patience at the plate in the bottom of the 10th almost resulted in a victory for the Black and Gold. With WCU reliever Devon Utterback struggling to find the strike zone, Millersville cut the lead to 10-8 on three straight walks. Per NCAA rules, Hosier had been placed at second in the 10th frame and she would score the eighth run of the day on Motsko's free pass. The Marauders were unable to get any closer, however, as Brooke Muth, WCU's starter, came back in to get the final two outs and her fifth save of the season.
Utterback (1-0) earned the win with an inning and a third of work. She got the victory despite walking four batters and striking out none. Muth struck out six in 8.2 innings, throwing over 150 pitches in the process.
Sarah Signore started for Millersville and gave up five runs over the first 4.2 innings. Eckman (7-8) struck out three over the final 5.1 innings, and yielded five runs (two earned) to the Golden Rams.
The back-and-forth affair lasted a season-long three hours and 21 minutes. It was nearly an hour longer than Millersville's second longest game this season, which came yesterday at Shippensburg in a 2:28 game two.
Freshman
Anna Libby, starting at catcher in place of the injured
Kelly Fitzgerald, registered three hits and scored twice. Hosier and Golomboski were responsible for MU's other multi-hit games. Stef Kerbacher and Ingersoll paced the Golden Rams with four hits apiece.
The Marauders tried to make the Golden Rams play catch-up in the nightcap. A three-run first inning highlighted by RBI singles from
Amy Kossyk and Libby put the home side ahead 3-1.
Small ball got the job done for WCU over the middle innings. Back-to-back RBI singles by Harbaugh and Ingersoll helped the Golden Rams secure a 4-3 lead in the third. That lead grew to 6-3 in the fourth behind a pair of unearned runs.
Millersville stormed back in the sixth with a six-run inning to grab a 9-6 lead. The Black and Gold batted around and tied the game on an RBI single from Signore and a two-run single from
Casey Coker. Motsko turned the lead back in MU's favor with a towering home run to left on the first pitch she saw from West Chester reliever, Kate Skokowski.
Alicia Hughes (8-7) gave up just two earned runs in throwing her 10th complete game of the season. Hughes recovered from some early mishaps behind her and did not walk a batter in the contest. She also struck out three Golden Rams.
Utterback (1-1) was aiming for her second win of the afternoon, but was responsible for the lead run that crossed the plate on Motsko's shot. The freshman was making just her second appearance of the season, both of which came on Saturday.
Saturday marked the final home games for three Millersville players. Golomboski, Hosier, and Kossyk will all graduate following this season. The Marauders can finish over .500 for the first time since 2006 with a sweep at Shepherd next Wednesday.
