Marauders' Pitching Stymies Holy Family

Box Scores: Game 1 / Game 2

Millersville, Pa. — Outstanding efforts in the circle from Sarah Signore and Alicia Hughes, backed by a solid day from the bats, helped the Millersville University softball team emerge with a doubleheader sweep of visiting Holy Family on Sunday afternoon. The Marauders grabbed the game one win, 6-3, before posting a convincing 5-1 victory in game two.

Signore came into action on Sunday needing four strikeouts to become the first Millersville pitcher to register 100 in a season since 2004. The junior righty went well above what was needed, mowing down 13 Holy Family (13-20) batters. With 109 ring-ups on the season, Signore moves into second place all-time on the program's single-season strikeout list. She situated herself between Kristin Heberlig (103 in 2004) and Laura Harris (203 in 2002).

The Marauders (19-22) offense scored in each of the first three innings to give Signore the run support she needed. After she helped herself at the plate with a single in the first, Kelly Fitzgerald drove her in with an RBI double. Back-to-back RBI hits in the second from Ally Homa and Lindsay Hosier made it 3-0, and the lead ballooned to 4-0 in the third on a Casey Coker RBI double.

Holy Family got all of its runs in one swoop on a three-run home run from Cassandra Black in the fourth. The Black and Gold answered with one in the home half of the fourth and one in the sixth to make the final margin 6-3. For a second consecutive day Millersville recorded 11 hits in a game.

Hosier, Signore, and Fitzgerald, the top three batters in the Marauder lineup, combined to go 8-for-12 with three runs scored and four RBIs in game one. Hosier doubled twice and tripled in her four plate appearances.

Signore (7-8) was the story of game one, however. She cruised along, allowing only three hits all afternoon and striking out every Holy Family batter at least once. She struck out the side in the sixth and also struck out at least two batters in four other innings. The 13 K's were season and career-highs for the Waynesboro, Pa., product.

The Tigers got their only hits in the game from Black, Danielle McDevitt, and Kasey Barnes. Losing pitcher Angela DiBeneditto was roughed up, allowing six runs on 11 hits and striking out three.

Hughes took her shot at Holy Family's lineup in game two and came out with similar success. Hughes also set season and career-highs in strikeouts as she rang up seven Tiger batters. Hughes threw a complete game five-hitter, the fewest hits she's allowed since surrendering three in a win against Davis & Elkins back on Mar. 21.

Two runs in the third and three in the fifth aided Hughes in getting her sixth win of the year. Once again it was the top of the order that was responsible for the offensive production. The top three, plus Amy Kossyk, accounted for five of the team's eight hits and all of the team's five runs. Signore, Fitzgerald, and Kossyk each had an RBI. Anna Libby had the Marauders only other RBI of the afternoon, which she earned by drawing a bases-loaded walk in the fifth.

DiBeneditto pushed the only HFU run across in game two with a third inning double. Jody Searfoss was responsible for all five Millersville runs in taking the loss. Searfoss struggled with her command, evidenced by the five walks she allowed.

Millersville hosts Lincoln (Pa.) in doubleheader action on Wednesday at the Millersville University Softball Field. Game one begins at 3 p.m.
