Millersville Swept in Final PSAC East Tune-Up

Game 1
Game 2

Wilson, N.C. -
The Millersville baseball team closed out its spring trip Tuesday afternoon, but the canceled doubleheader Monday and a two-game sweep at the hands of Barton was hardly the conclusion the Maruaders had in mind.

Barton (11-8) took game one by a 6-0 score and then outslugged Millersville (5-7) with an eight-run inning that included two grand slams in the nightcap, 14-13.

Barton's senior right-hander James Holmes held Millersville to five hits and walked just one in a complete-game effort. Kyle Belanchik kept Millersville in the game early, giving up just two runs on four hits through the first four innings. He worked his way through the fifth but gave up four more runs in the inning. Zach Eckley pitched one perfect inning, but the Marauders' could not muster the necessary run support.

The runs came in bunches for Millersville in game two. But Barton's lineup was just one run better. Millersville scored its 13 runs on just seven hits, but took full advantage of 12 walks. Corey Phelan hit his second homer of the year, walked twice and scored four times. Derek Kline drew two walks and scored three runs, and Mike DeSanto walked three times. Miles Gallagher went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs.

Millersville scored three in the first and two in the second but was matched by Barton and the score stood tied at five after two full innings. Barton's starter Dave Koppenheffer didn't record an out before exiting the game with three runs allowed. Millersville's starter Brooks Rothschild worked three innings, allowing five runs.

The Marauders took a momentary lead with a three-run fourth sparked by Phelan's solo blast. Barton drew within two runs in the bottom of the inning, but the Marauders extended the lead with five more runs in the fifth including a two-run homer from freshman Jeff Heisey, who went 2-for-3 with three RBIs in the game.

But an error to start the bottom of the fifth opened the floodgates for Barton. The Bulldogs erased Millersville's seven-run lead and took the lead for good with grand slams from Braxton Lewis and Chris Rawlings. Millersville went down in order in each of the last two innings.

Millersville now heads home from its southern trip and opens PSAC East play Friday against nationally ranked West Chester at 12 p.m. Live stats for the game will be available.
