Game 2
Millersville, Pa. — For a second straight afternoon the Millersville softball team came away empty on its home field. The Marauders suffered 7-4 and 5-4 setbacks against visiting East Stroudsburg at the Millersville University Softball Field on Wednesday.
A pair of mishaps gave new life to Warriors' lead-off hitter Brittany Racek and she took full advantage by cracking a home run deep to left field to put East Stroudsburg (12-13, 2-0 PSAC East) out in front in game one.
Sarah Signore's only offensive help over the first six innings came from herself. An RBI double that scored
Lindsay Hosier got the Marauders (11-12, 0-4 PSAC East) on the board in the third, but by that time ESU had stretched the lead to 4-1.
The visitors extended the lead to 7-1 in the top half of the seventh with yet another Racek home run. The Black and Gold tried to mount a comeback scoring three times in the seventh themselves, but it was not nearly enough.
Jill Golomboski picked up a two-run single in defeat and
Keena Elbin led off the seventh with a double for her first career hit in her first career at-bat.
Solid throughout much of March, Signore (5-3) struggled to keep the ball in the yard for the second day in a row. The righty has given up six home runs in her last two appearances. Jackie Battaglino (7-6) earned the win for the Warriors and retired 11 Millersville batters courtesy of the strikeout.
Hosier was a bright spot for the Black and Gold in the opener, however. The senior was 2-for-3 in game one and swiped two more bases to give her 11 steals this season.
Game two saw the Warriors and Marauders match runs in the third, fourth, and fifth innings. East Stroudsburg's Kara Darcey homered in the fifth to give her team a brief 3-2 lead, but she was countered by Hosier in the bottom half of the inning. Hosier got a pitch she liked from ESU starter Caitlin Monahan (5-7) and skied it out to left for her third home run of the season.
The Warriors took a 5-3 lead in the seventh thanks to an Alicea Ashe two-run single and although Millersville tried once again for some late inning heroics, they could not push the tying run across.
Amy Kossyk's bloop single pulled MU within a run, but Monahan closed the game out with the Marauders stranding Kossyk on second.
The Marauders got hits from seven of their nine starters, but the clutch hitting just wasn't there. Hosier continued to stay hot with a 3-for-4 game and she drove in two of Millersville's four runs. The Glen Mills, Pa., native has racked up 11 hits in her last 15 plate appearances. She's also run her team-high batting average to a season-best .413.
Millersville, desparate for some PSAC East wins, will look to knock off Shippensburg on Saturday afternoon at the Millersville University Softball Field. First pitch for game one is scheduled for 1 p.m.
