Game 1
Game 2
Millersville, Pa. - Millersville continued its recent struggles Tuesday afternoon, dropping a PSAC Eastern Division doubleheader to 10th-ranked West Chester by scores of 10-1 and 6-2.
The Marauders (6-13, 1-5 PSAC East) managed nine hits including just two in the first game against Eric Carmichael (5-1). West Chester (18-3, 6-0 PSAC East) pounded out 10 hits in the opener and nine more in the nightcap, pushing its winning streak to nine games.
The Marauders, who have now lost nine of its last 10 and four in a row against conference opponents, were held to two runs or fewer for the fifth time in six conference games. Since the start of conference play, the Marauders are hitting .203 while opponents have totaled 38 runs and a .321 batting average.
In the opener, Carmichael stymied the Marauder hitters, allowing only Jeff Heisey's bunt single in the third until freshman Carlos Medina hit the first home run of his career in the sixth, ending the pitcher's upset bid.
Medina's homer was too little and too late for the Marauders. The Golden Rams pounded Kyle Belanchik (0-3) for six runs on 10 hits and four walks. Belanchik battled, though, striking out five in his five innings. Four different Golden Rams recorded at least two hits, and Kevin McGrath led the way with three hits, including a homer, and three RBIs.
It was much of the same story in the nightcap. McGrath jumpstarted the Golden Rams with two more hits, and his walk in the first helped set the table for a three-run inning off Millersville starter Jason E. Long (0-2).
West Chester built a 5-0 lead before the Marauders got on the board in the bottom of the fifth. Miles Gallagher singled in a run and Derek Kline plated Kent Gerdes on a sacrifice fly.
The Golden Rams added one more in the sixth off reliever Ryan Stauffer. The Marauders' last gasp came up short, too. Gerdes singled to start the seventh and Gallagher reached on an error. But with the tying run on deck, West Chester's Carman Daddario retired two-straight Marauders to close the game.
Fred Breidenbach (5-0) picked up the win for the Golden Rams after scattering five hits and two runs while striking out nine in five innings.
Gerdes went 2-for-2 with a run off the bench, and freshman Jeff Heisey went 2-for-3.
