Softball Wins Early, Falls Late at W.Va. Wesleyan Tournament

Box Score vs. Glenville State
Box Score vs. West Virginia Wesleyan

Salem, Va. –
Early success at the dish paved the way in the Millersville softball team's 7-2 win over Glenville State, but West Virginia Wesleyan caught the Marauders in a back-to-back situation and used it to down the Black and Gold 3-0 on Friday night at the James Moyer Sports Complex.

Kelly Fitzgerald ensured Millersville (10-7) was ready to play from the start against Glenville State (13-17). The Marauder backstop picked up her fifth RBI of the weekend with a single in the first that scored Lindsay Hosier. Fitzgerald added to the RBI tally in the third when she launched a two-run home run to center field for a 5-0 lead. The shot was almost a carbon copy of the one she hit on Friday evening and this one ended Glenville State starter Meagan Lesser's day.

In between Fitzgerald's power display, Ally Homa added a two-run single for the Black and Gold.

The Marauders tacked on a run for a 6-0 lead in the sixth when Deanna Schneiderreit scored on a wild pitch by Pioneers' reliever Mandy Parkulo.

Playing a lackluster game, the Glenville State bats finally came alive in the late innings. Lesser, who stayed in the game as the designated player, roped a one-out single to left field that scored Tia Via and Erin Morgan. 6-2 was all the closer GSC would get, despite loading the bases with one-out in the seventh.

Courtney Eckman (3-3) earned her second win of the weekend with a six-inning outing. Tiring late, Eckman gave up nine of the 10 Glenville State hits, but only allowed two runs. Alicia Hughes came on with in the seventh and got out of the bases loaded jam by getting Via looking and inducing Morgan into a game-ending groundout.

The nightcap featured a pitcher's duel between Millersville's Sarah Signore and West Virginia Wesleyan's (17-7) Patricia Moreno. Neither pitcher blinked much until Signore allowed a fourth inning home run to the Bobcats' Shelby Carlson. Carlson's home run was the first hit allowed by Signore on the evening.

The junior recovered nicely by striking out the side in the fifth, but Millersville just couldn't solve Moreno. Twice in the top of the sixth the Marauders nearly tied the game. Fitzgerald drove Moreno's no-out offering to deep left field, but Wesleyan's Kashilia Young made a terrific over the shoulder catch at the wall to preserve the lead. MU's next batter, Amy Kossyk, put a scare into the Bobcat faithful when she took a Moreno pitch to deep center, but there was just enough room for Lexi Rodgers to camp under it and make the play.

Carlson added insurance for Wesleyan in the bottom of the inning with her second homer of the night. This time it was a two-run shot down the left field line that landed just fair.

Signore (5-1) suffered her first loss of the season, but struck out seven in the game. The junior, who entered the game with a 1.76 ERA, gave up more than one run for the first time in her last five appearances.

Moreno didn't need to be flashy; she just got the job done. The senior scattered four hits and struck out five in the complete game victory. Signore's double in the third was the only extra-base hit Moreno allowed all evening. The Bobcats, hosts of this weekend's tournament, avenged their 6-3 loss to Millersville in the Salem tourney from a season ago.

Millersville finishes off play in the West Virginia Wesleyan Tournament tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m., with a tilt against Davis & Elkins College.
