Craig Catapults Marauders Over West Chester

Box Score

West Chester, Pa. — Count Jenna Craig as a player who doesn't mind an extra day off. The senior matched her career-high with 19 points and added 11 rebounds in Sunday afternoon's 53-44 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Eastern Division win at West Chester.

The Marauders (17-4, 7-1 PSAC East) never trailed in the game, which was postponed 24 hours due to heavy snowfall across the Mid-Atlantic region on Friday night and during the day on Saturday. Craig didn't take long to get started, either. She converted a lay-up inside just 10 seconds into the contest and proceeded to score seven of the team's first 12 points as Millersville built a 12-3 lead before the game was eight minutes old.

An Ashley Moyer 3-pointer extended the lead to 18 in the waning moments of the half, but it was not all about offense for the Black and Gold. MU's defense —a staple of its success all season long— allowed only 18 points of its own in the opening 20 minutes. The Marauders blanketed a West Chester (14-7, 4-4 PSAC East) offense that came into Sunday's game averaging 68.8 points per game, fifth best in the PSAC. Janelle Garber, WCU's main scoring threat, was only able to muster six first half points and four of them came at the foul line.

Despite trimming the lead to 13 at the break, West Chester continued to trail by double digits throughout the first ten minutes of the second half. Craig and Raquel Green both had four points and Dominique Stroman added three to keep Millersville comfortably ahead.

West Chester's comeback bid was led by Megan Stewart. Stewart drilled a 3-pointer and went 2-of-2 at the line to make it a two possession game with 6:36 remaining. Craig had the answer though, scoring twice in a row to extend the lead back to 10.

The Black and Gold would not allow WCU to get any closer than six the rest of the way. Millersville's much maligned foul shooting came through with a 6-of-9 effort in the final 3:24 to wrap up the Marauders' 10th win in 11 games. Millersville tightened its stranglehold on a PSAC playoff spot just a little bit more with the victory. The Marauders own a 1.5 game lead in the division and are now three full games ahead of the fourth and final playoff position in the East Division.

Green enjoyed an excellent day for MU. The Philadelphia, Pa., native finished one rebound shy of a double-double, putting up 11 points and nine boards. Moyer added nine points, including a pair of triples. The Marauders outrebounded West Chester 45-43 and got excellent contributions from Gabrielle Styles (7) and Mashira Newman (6) in that department. In addition to her 17th career double-double, Craig blocked a career-high four shots.

Stewart finished with a team-high 11 points, but did so on 3-of-11 shooting. The junior guard racked up a game-high six steals as well. Garber had nine points and Jillian Keefer eight for the Golden Rams, whose starters shot a combined 8-of-33 on the afternoon. West Chester played without its third leading scorer and rebounder, Allison Hostetter.

The Marauders' NCAA Division II-leading scoring defense lowered its points per game allowed average and in doing so swept West Chester in the regular season for the second time in three seasons.

Up next for Millersville is a home contest with the Shippensburg Lady Raiders. The game is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 10.
