Raquel Green vs. ESU 2/3/10

Women's Basketball

Marauders' Green Too Much for Warriors

Box Score

Millersville, Pa. — Sloppy stretches of play almost doomed the Millersville women's basketball team on Wednesday night, but when it needed someone to step up, senior Raquel Green was there to deliver. Green totaled game highs of 19 points and 12 rebounds as the Marauders beat East Stroudsburg 55-46 at Pucillo Gymnasium for their ninth win in 10 games.

Green, a Philadelphia, Pa., native, established her dominance on the boards from the get go. She nabbed four rebounds--three offensive--in the first 3:25, and it was just a foreshadowing of things to come. By the end of the half the 5-foot-10 Green had already registered her second double-double of the season with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

The rest of the Marauders (16-4, 6-1 PSAC East) failed to follow the veteran's lead, though, scoring just 15 first half points combined and allowing the struggling Warriors (3-17, 1-6 PSAC East) to hang around. East Stroudsburg's offense didn't do much to help its upset chances, but two late 3-pointers from Barb Borst and a pair of foul shots from leading scorer DeAnna Rayam allowed the visitors to trail by just four, 26-22, at the break.

East Stroudsburg would grasp the lead for the first and only time of the night early in the second half. A Rayam lay-up put the Warriors ahead 27-26. But the edge lasted for all of 32 seconds with Ashley Moyer knocking down a trey to push the Black and Gold back in front. Moyer's 3-pointer began an 11-0 run for the Marauders, who led 37-27 with 14:27 to go.

Unable to mount a charge, ESU's deficit remained in double figures for the better part of the second half. Another Borst triple cut the lead to 50-45 with just over a minute left, but Mashira Newman nailed four straight foul shots to ice the win for Millersville, which improved to 10-0 at home this season.

Newman picked up three steals in the game to pass Safiyyah Bashir for the most steals by a freshman in program history. Bashir's record of 71 steals by a freshman stood for nearly 12 years, but Newman now has 73 this season.

In addition to Green's fourth career double-double, MU was helped out by Newman and Moyer, who both tallied 11 points on the evening. Jenna Craig had seven points and 10 boards in the victory. Millersville beat East Stroudsburg for the 18th time in 21 games dating back to 2000.

Borst led the Warriors with 12 points on 4-of-5 shooting from beyond the arc. The Marauders, who lead the nation in scoring defense at 50.9 points per game, once again impressed in that area of the game. Rayam was the latest in a long line of scorers to be shut down by the MU defense, as she scored just nine points and was 2-of-9 from the floor. The Warriors did become just the second team all season to out-score the Marauders in bench points, however. ESU held an 11-5 edge from its reserves. The only other team to accomplish that feat was California (Pa.), exactly a month ago to the day.

Millersville travels to West Chester on Saturday for the start of the second half of PSAC Eastern Division play. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
