Lancaster, Pa. - The Millersville wrestling team overcame a season filled with adversity Saturday night by using a patchwork lineup to gut out a 29-16 victory over Franklin & Marshall in the Battle for the Rupp Cup.
This year's win was Millersville's seventh in a row in the series and was even more meaningful after Dr. Ted Rupp, the trophy's namesake and former Millersville and F&M wrestling coach, passed away at the age of 94 last week.
Like they have all season long, the Marauders battled through injuries. Three Marauders (4-13-1) wrestled up a weight class and little used freshman
Zac Wawrzyniak-Bush scored a key major decision at 157 pounds.
Both teams forfeited weight classes, but Millersville won five of the seven bouts contested. Along with Wawrzyniak-Bush, senior #J.J. Lester
earned an 11-2 major decision over Eric Norgard. Fellow senior Jarrett Hostetter#, moving up to 165 pounds in the absence of
Jeremy Brooks, defeated Anthony Bongarzone, 9-3, notching his 21st win of the season and the 98th of his career.
Redshirt sophomore
Shane Smith (174) kept Millersville rolling with a 6-4 decision over Matt Fullowan, and freshman
Josh Marquard picked up a 6-3 win at 184.
Millersville is now 16-3 all-time against Franklin & Marshall. Friday's match concluded Millersville's regular season. The program hosts the NCAA East Regional Championships on March 6.
