Millersville

Mashira Newman vs. Ship 2/15/10

Women's Basketball

No. 25 Marauders Solid From Start to Finish in Rout of Shippensburg

Box Score

Millersville, Pa. — The No. 25 Millersville women's basketball team got another outstanding offensive performance from Ashley Moyer, but more impressive was its ability to refine the smaller details of the game in a 68-41 PSAC Eastern Division manhandling of Shippensburg at Pucillo Gymnasium on Monday night.

Outhustled and outworked all evening, Shippensburg saw its shot at a win evaporate before the game was a half old. Behind the hot hand of Moyer, who nailed three first half treys, Millersville (19-4, 9-1 PSAC East) built a 41-19 halftime lead. The Marauders swarmed the Lady Raiders (12-14, 5-5 PSAC East) on defense and forced 11 turnovers

Shippensburg entered the game with two of the top three scores in the conference in Lauren Beckley and Kasey Gardner. The two players combined to do almost all of the scoring in the first half scoring 15 of their team's 19 points. A pair of points from Kerry Conroy and Lindsay Howard were all that any of the other seven Lady Raiders who saw action in the half had to show for their efforts.

Millersville saw a scattering of offense, meanwhile and used it to finish the half on an 18-1 run. Moyer had 13 on 4-of-5 shooting and was a perfect 3-of-3 from downtown. Mashira Newman had a resurgence of sorts, going 4-of-7 in the opening 20 minutes to score nine. In her second game back from injury, Emily Balogh provided nine first half points as well, picking up some of the reserve slack on a team that lost a player to injury late last week and another just before Monday night's game.

Down 22 at the break, the Lady Raiders would get no closer than 18 the rest of the way and that came briefly with 16 minutes left in the game. Millersville continued to click on all cylinders, but not just offensively. The Black and Gold held a 43-36 edge on the boards, registered seven blocks, and turned the ball over just nine times all evening. The nine turnovers are the fewest by a Millersville squad since Jan. 2009, which also came —ironically— against Shippensburg.

The PSAC's leading scorer, Beckley, continued to have a nightmarish time against the MU defense. The senior was held to six points the last time the teams met, which was also the second-lowest output of her career. Monday wasn't much better as she scored 10 points on just 3-of-13 shooting. Gardner, who came in averaging in excess of 18 points a game, netted just nine and Shippensburg was held to its lowest point total since Feb. 2005.

Winners in 12 of their last 13 games, the Marauders were paced by three double-digit scorers. Moyer had a game-high 19 and tied a career-high with five 3-pointers. Newman scored 15, and Raquel Green had 12 in the victory. Newman also managed to pull down a game-high eight rebounds.

Millersville will be looking to avenge its only conference loss to date on Wednesday when the Cheyney Wolves visit Pucillo Gymnasium for a 6 p.m. tip-off.
