Millersville, Pa. – On a day in which the No. 8 Millersville hockey team honored its three seniors, it nearly knocked off the No. 1 team in the nation. The Marauders notched the first goal of the game but the Lady Raiders proved too much as the visitors came away with an 3-2 victory.
Paige Morrison got Millersville (9-10, 2-5 PSAC East) on the board first with a goal 17:45 into the first half.
Melissa McCarthy caught the deflection from
Emily Manwiller's shot from the top of the arch and pushed the ball who Morrison who deflected the ball to the back of the cage.
Shippensburg (18-0, 7-0 PSAC East) answered at 26:49 when Ashley Taylor and Katie Pufnock connected to knot the score. The Lady Raiders took the lead less than two minutes later on a corner attempt when Kristina Taylor found her way around
Sara Dickinson off of a Jamie Levy pass.
Shippensburg took its 2-1 lead into the half.
Millersville tied the score at 2-2 10 minutes into the second period off of a penalty corner. Manwiller slammed the ball toward the cage from the top of the circle, as
Tricia Jackson positioned herself at the corner to deflect the ball in.
After Millersville caused a foul in the circle with 53:50 showing on the clock, Shippensburg was awarded a penalty stroke. Bre White sent the ball to the top left corner of the cage out of Dickinson's reach to give her squad its final score of the game.
The Marauders fought until the end of action but could not find a way to score, and the Lady Raiders held onto their unblemished record.
Dickinson set aside 10 shots on goal throughout the 70 minutes, and Shippensburg fired off 26 shots.
In addition to Senior Day, Millersville also honored the 65th anniversary of the program as well as the 1985 national runner-up squad.
The Marauders travel to No. 4 East Stroudsburg next weekend for its final game of the regular season. The match-up with the Warriors is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 13 at 2:30 p.m.
