Millersville, Pa. - Domonique Stroman knocked down a free throw with .04 seconds remaining on the clock to avoid overtime and lead her team to an 80-79 win over visiting Glenville State Saturday evening in Pucillo Gymnasium. Stroman missed the first of two attempts but sank the shot that mattered, as Millersville opened its season with two-straight wins for the fifth time in as many years.
The Marauders (2-0) found themselves down 72-65 with 7:12 to play and battled to score nine consecutive points over a span of four minutes to take a two-point lead. The Pioneers (3-2) tied the game at 79-79 with 15 seconds remaining when Kenyell Goodson scored for two.
Stroman collected a rebound off of a missed
Mashira Newman shot and went up for a lay-up to win the game when she was fouled by Glenville State's Miranda Reed. And the rest was history.
Millersville and the Pioneers exchanged points throughout the majority of the contest., aside from an MU scoring drought to start the game. Glenville State took an immediate 9-0 lead to begin the game but that did not deter the Marauders.
Just six minutes into action the visitors held a 20-6 advantage, but in typical Millersville fashion,
Mary Fleig's club oared back with to earn its first lead of the night at 25-24 on an
Aurielle Mosley lay-up.
From there the squads saw nine tied scores and 10 lead changes, but it was the Marauders who prevailed in the end.
Newman registered her fist double-double of the season off of a game-high 11 rebounds—including eight defensive—and game-high 20 points. Her quick hands also picked up five steals.
Aurielle Mosley chipped in 18 points for Millersville and grabbed seven boards. Sharp from behind the arc all night,
Jess Beswick knocked down three 3-pointers and five buckets to total a career-high 13 points.
The Marauders host fifth-ranked Holy Family on Tuesday, Nov. 23 for the final of their home-opening stretch. Tip off is slated for 6 p.m. in Pucillo Gymnasium.
