Millersville, Pa. – The No. 10 Millersville field hockey offense put on an impressive show Saturday afternoon, registering a season-high 32 shots to drop Mansfield 3-1 at Chryst Field at Biemesderfer Stadium in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) crossover game. Millersville evened its record to 6-6 overall with the win, while the Mountaineers fell to 3-6.
Just 9:20 into the first period
Emily Woodland and
Tricia Jackson connected to put the Marauders up one. Woodland collected a deflected shot off of Mansfield goalkeeper Jamie Twist's pads and directly slid the ball to Jackson, who flipped the ball into the left side of the cage.
Twelve minutes later the Marauders took advantage of a penalty corner opportunity to take a 2-0 lead.
Ashley Weber gathered the corner pass and dribbled into the circle where she found
Paige Morrison, who tapped the ball to the back of an open cage.
With less than 10 minutes remaining in the half, Mansfield's Kristyn Grunza found her way around
Sara Dickinson to register an unassisted goal and give the Mountaineers their lone score of the contest.
The 2-1 score that took the clubs into halftime would stand well into the second period. At 57:43
Jessica Cave sent a corner pass to an open
Emily Manwiller, whose shot bounced off of Twist's pads and right back into her possession.
Manwiller received the deflection and slammed the ball, this time rapping the back of the cage and lifting the Marauders to a 3-1 lead.
The Marauders kept the ball in their possession for the majority of the game, racking up 32 shots to Mansfield's 5. Millersville also held a 16-2 advantage in penalty corners. The Mountaineers failed to produce a shot or corner in second-half action.
Twist set aside 14 shots on goal for Mansfield. Dickinson registered two saves for the Marauders, both of which came in the first half.
Millersville heads to Brookeville, N.Y. on Monday, Oct. 11 where the Black and Gold will face conference opponent C.W. Post. The matchup is scheduled for 4 p.m.
