Box Score

Millersville, Pa. – Kutztown's Abbey Sheeler notched a goal in the 58th minute of play to break a tied score and lift the No. 5 Golden Bears' field hockey team to a tightly contested 4-3 win over No. 8 Millersville Wednesday afternoon in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Eastern Division contest at Chryst Field at Biemesderfer Stadium.

The Marauders (7-8, 1-4 PSAC East) got things rolling in the 15th minute when Samantha Ruane registered an unassisted goal to put Millersville up one. Champayne Hess' shot from the top of the circle ricocheted off of Kutztown (7-4, 3-2 PSAC East) goalkeeper Emily Falko's pads, and Ruane collected the ball and sent it right back into the cage.

Knotting the score just five minutes later, Kutztown's Jenna Gregory found her way around Sara Dickinson to put the Golden Bears on the board. Millersville did not hesitate to respond, however, stealing back the lead merely 20 seconds later.

Ashley Weber seemed untouchable as she weaved her way in and out of gold jerseys down to the Kutztown circle. Weber's shot from five feet out was deflected but Ruane, again, was there to snag the rebound and send the ball to the back of the cage to give the Marauders a 2-1 edge.

With 31 minutes of first period action down, Erin Reynolds and Jamie Koenig connected for a Kutztown goal to tie the score at 2-2. The squads went into halftime with a draw.

The Golden Bears came out of the gate and didn't waste any time scoring in the second half. Koenig assisted on a Gregory goal to give Kutztown its first lead of the afternoon.

At 47:29 Emily Woodland dribbled around the Golden Bear defense and while in the act of seizing a one-on-one opportunity with Falko she registered a penalty stroke. Emily Manwiller stepped in to take the stroke and sent the ball with full force to the lower left corner of the cage to tie the score for the third time throughout the contest.

Sheeler's game-winning goal came 10 minutes later when she collected the deflection of a corner shot and pushed the ball past Dickinson to secure the win for the Golden Bears.

Kutztown out-shot the Marauders by a 27-12 margin and held a 17-7 advantage in corners. Falko registered six saves on the day.

Dickinson came away with 11 saves, including nine in the second half.

Millersville travels to No. 4 Bloomsburg on Tuesday, Oct. 26 for a 6 p.m., conference match up with the Huskies.
